223AI - rechamber or rebarrel

If it was my rifle, I'd shoot the .223 and enjoy the heck out of it. And to get a 223AI, a new - chambered - barrel would be the way to go. Easiest would be to get one from Urbanrifleman. I'd stick with 12 or 14 twist and light bullets going fast. It's a great cartridge and the 223AI I've shot the most has a 25" Schneider barrel, 14 twist, chamber .250nk and 0 freebore. The working load is a 50gr BK bullet and VV133 powder, @ 3825 which is a nice increase over the .223. And with 40's the 223AI will do 4100 very nicely accurate, and I've gone to almost 4200 with the same accuracy and no pressure signs. All those velocities are within the 22-250 envelope. Note that brass used is the very tough / excellent IMI, which is unfortunately no longer available except as sometimes seen loaded ammo. Also, with the AI, fireform loads are faster than std. 223, and very accurate field loads........My first 1000 rds through that gun were with 50s on pd's, longest messy gutpile was at 375 yds (paced).

I now stock the 14 twist as well as the 12 twist.

The time and components are far more expensive than the barrel. Get a good barrel to improve the chances of easy success. Hold onto the old one for a rainy day and tougher times. I would also get one from urbanrifleman for a nut barrel. I have a 223 ai tikka. I really like the 223 AI. My fireforming loads shoot amazing! My only regret with 223 AI is I waited too long!

Down the road I'm considering converting my Savage Model 12 to a 223AI to gain a little more room for pushing a 62gr ELD-VT. I've always been happy with accuracy of the current barrel, and it has less than 1,500 rounds on it. It has shot well with everything from 50gr Vmax to the old 75gr Amax. Almost everything I've shot through it has been Moly coated projectiles. Is it worth having the current barrel re-chambered, or am I better off saving the headaches and just buying new barrel?

Give Bradley (Urbanrifleman) a call ASAP and order a .223AI. Put it away, when the time comes swap it out. Bradley will discuss and help you fill your needs to get you the barrel that is suited for you. That's all I've got to say about this.

First I need to call him and order a 22BR barrel. Then I need to buy an action, trigger, and stock/chassis to put it all in. By then, HOPEFULLY, my 20P upper will finally be finished so I can start doing load development on it. Then, I'll need to assemble the bolt gun and start doing load development on that. After all that's done, I'll be ready to think more about the 223ai. That said, I'm convinced that just buying a barrel from him IS my best option. I'm just not going to start down that path until I have the 20P running good, and the 22BR at least assembled.

22br is freaking sweet.

One of my first choices for a customer.

If you get a barrel from Brad, he’ll tell you the recipes for powder and bullets that will get you really close on your accuracy loads and that’s a big plus. Saves you components and time. He knows what his barrels like because he shoots them. He answers his phone or he’ll call you back pretty quickly and he goes the extra mile for his customers. I’ve got personal experience to back this up.
