Herters white/red box 243 brass?

Has anyone ever used this brass? It's older Herters white and red box brass that says made in Finland (white box) made in Sweden (red box) Would I be right to assume the white box were made by Sako or Lapua? Are they of high quality? I have the opportunity to pick up 3 virgin boxes and the brass looks decent. He also has 5 boxes of the red box, so Im also assuming thats made by Norma? Which would you grab given the opportunity? Or would you just go with starline or winchester?

I was born in 85' never even heard of Herters...

Herters was BIG in its time. Waseca MN. Was their home about 80 miles from my house.
I don't have any red box but a bunch of the Norma in 6mm Rem. it's been excellent brass and I still use it.
If you buy it I'd anneal it before use to avoid age hardening of the brass.

Various Herter's ammo is still being produce (mostly made by Winchester to my limited knowledge) . . . not necessarily known for quality ammo. I've used some their ammo and it was cheap ammo and I got what I paid for. . . poor results. That doesn't mean that the brass can't perform well, but that'll depend on your reloading process and skill level.

Just curious, is it cheaper than new brass? And are you doing stuff that requires really accurate ammo?

I have an old ruger no 1 in 243, and it shoots maybe 1.5 moa (which I consider perfectly acceptable). For something like that, brass quality is probably the least of my concern.

I love vintage equipment and components because they’re cool, and would be hard to resist nifty brass like that if it’s cheaper than normal new brass. On the other hand, it’s probably not magical or worth a premium over new.

The brass he's pictured is Old school original Herters brand 60s early 70s. It's good brass.

Compared to 60's 70's standards or current standards? ;)
I can and do push the brass. If that's what you mean.

This isn't a precision rifle buy any means, just a factory model 70 coyote light. But it will be used for coyotes and steel at 600 yards, so it does need to be consistent.

These look pretty old, from the 50s or 60s from my limited research. Not a lot of info on them. Anything made in Finland or Sweden has got to be decent quality, and better than the rem, win, fed, hornady stuff you'd think right?

Its priced similar to Starline. Which is why I'm considering it. I don't need Lapua or Peterson, but then again I don't want junk rem, win, fed, or hornady either. Starline seemed to be the best for price/quality. And it's actually cheaper than the rem, win, fed, horn stuff at that.

It seems like the usual answer is to buy both! It would be a pretty fun science fair project to compare new starline vs vintage scandi brass, I know I’m curious.

I run starline brass in my 243 in addition to a bunch of other calibers and it’s been consistently good for me. If money is an issue, starline is the low-risk high value way to go in my opinion

kyote- lf your Model 70 Coyote 243 is a New Haven gun with laminated stock and stainless Wilson barrel its one of the last TRUE Winchesters imhop. My son has one of the first Coyotes that Winchester made around
25yrs ago. His 223Rem Coyote is the only rifle he has for EVERYTHING from shooting prairie dogs to South Carolina Whitetail

Sadly its not the heavier coyote with the laminated stock and heavy barrel. Those rifles are shooters. This is the coyote light, which has the B&C stock with a 24" fluted medium varmint barrel. I'm not sure where it was made, I don't have the rifle in my hands yet.

Herters was bought out by Cabelas in either 1977 or 1981 (both years show up) after bankruptcy. You just have to watch out on stuff as Cabelas still randomly uses the herters name.
