BOG Death Grip Tripod

Wondering how may here have used the BOG Death Grip tripod in the field and what their experiences are. I saw a post by our member friend Stormbringer using his on rockchucks, looked like a good setup.

Some of the rockchuck areas I shoot have long grass that interferes with prone shooting, plus being into 'geezerhood' now, laying down on my belly gets problematic, getting up evern more so. As this device works from prone, kneeling/sitting and standing, it would eliminate the issues I personally must deal with.

Depends on it's use. I tried one on a pronghorn hunt where I needed a set up where fast accusation and shots happened fairly quick during the rut in Wyoming. Wasn't the best tool on my belt. Stuck with my rifle attached bipod. For ground hogs or rock chucks, I'd think it could be fantastic. It's great sitting and waiting on a target to show up. Gun is locked in place and in the direction of the target. Fine tuning could be done without rushing the shot, this is possibly the best mobile rest out there.

I've had mine for a few years now. I like it. Mine is the aluminum one so it's a bit heavier than the carbon one.
It is extra gear to carry and a camp chair is a nice addition (more gear).

I have the carbon version. Very steady. I mainly use for coyote hunting where I get set up and leave gun in saddle while calling and glassing. Holds firm and ready to engage when I see a yote

I've used mine in pop up hub blinds for deer hunts with a muzzleloader. Worked great for that. Deer coming into food sources where you know the shot is not a fast set up. Again, it's not a tool for all uses but it sure can be one of the best for some.

I bought the aluminum one when I lived in Oregon for coyote and sage rats. I used it a few times then moved to Indiana and haven't used it since I don't hunt any longer just target shooting. Nice solid tripod for sure.

I just purchased one for a upcoming Moose hunt. Seems like it will be handy when calling needs to be in taller vegetation than what a rifle mounted bi pod will allow. Not as steady as I would like though.

I've got one and didn't like it as I could not get "steady" behind the gun. I found that "I" wobbled too much, the tripod is steady, but the shooter has to be steady as well IMO. I tried a couple different seating positions/chairs, even on solid concrete and solid bench seat, "I" still wobbled too much to stay on a small target like pdogs & rats. JMO. Be glad to get it out of the way if anybody interested. LOL

I put a Zero FOX Givin Ball head on mine. What a HUGE upgrade and worth every penny

Leveling the rifle(side to side) with an as is death grip is only accomplished by adjusting the legs. A fairly slow process. I found shots past 230-240 yards needed very accurate levelling. I have added a ball head/arca plate setup, leveling is fast and easy now. I'm sitting in a chair in blinds for deer/coyote. Standing at night calling coyote. For me I need regular standing practice for shots over 200 yards. Seated no practice needed for confident shots out past 200 yards. With a level rifle. I'm 5-10 I set the legs narrowest angle, all the way extended(max height) for standing shots With the ballhead I can still use the factory top, so firearms without an arca plate are still useable. You will definitely need to test for poi shifts between bench bags and tripod. The tripod is quite sturdy, will hold a rifle for you, either in the saddle or leveling/ballhead arca plates. I often set the legs for prone and sight in on a bench.

I tried one this year and hated it. Could never get steady enough to hold "minute of rat". Might look into a different head as stated above.

I already had a trigger stick that I used in my ground blind, so I ordered one of these vices for it. Worked slick this past November.

I have had one for a couple of years. I haven't used mine much. They are quite solid, but also heavy to carry afield. In their standard form it takes too long to level things up. I bought parts to convert mine to a ball head here:

****I have been working on a printed bushing to replace the aluminum one for a few reasons. Main one being availability, I can print these like any of my other items so sourcing is not an issue. I can also pass the cost savings on to you guys and a little more weight reduction. I will be working on a printed adapter plate in the future also. I wanted to make sure the integrity and strength were both still very sound so I adjusted materials and design until I got it right. ***** There will be nothing new to installation, a dab of Loctite is still highly recommended on...

I bought the ball head on Amazon and have an arca plate on it. Hope to use it some in hunting situations but have mainly used it so far to Mount my spotting scope on.

They have been a game changer for us hunting when the elk are on the flats ! Cannot shoot prone. Have to shoot standing up, so l always pack one for open field situations.

I love using mine when shooting pd's.. I have a sling hooked to it and carry a folding chair too.

You lose about a pound, replacing the saddle/factory parts with a ballhead. Carries better also with less top weight. Try and place arca plates near the balance point of the firearm.

Much good info has been imparted, thanks to all who responded.

My remaining question: To convert to a ball-head, where's the best outfit to get one? Is a good kit available from a commercial maker, or must we go to open spaces guy who 3-D prints his? All the stuff he's posted looks confusing to me; I'd like a simple R&R solution to just bolt-on. The Death Grip unit seems good so far, but as mentioned, it would be much, much better with a ball-head installed from what I can see and after fiddeling with mine that's brand new.

I'm a bit miffed as to why BOG does not supply a ball-head on their tripod, or at least offer one as an option.

Do a PM with open spaces. It's been awhile and my memory isn't what it once was, but I'm pretty sure he offers a complete kit. It's a pretty easy mod when you have the parts.
