Neck turning .284 Norma brass on the K&M neck turner. After about 10 cases, the turner gets hot to handle. Using a hand held power drill and holding the K&M unit in my bare hand. Is this heat normal? Turning the brass to .014" thickness.

yes , take a bowl of ice cubes and lay the turner on them between cases
Do you use the K&M expander before turning the necks? It greatly reduces the friction. A little lube on the mandrel and cutter helps reduce heat too. Use a damp cloth on an cool pack and lay the neck turner on it between cuts. I normally turn 25 to 50 case at a session with this method.
dteamer - I am using a K&M expander and imperial wax on inside of necks. Nothing on the cutter.
Like others said make sure you use the expander first. I put plenty of petroleum oil on the expender mandrel and the turner mandrel. I think all other lubes are not as good as pet oil. Don't remember my turner getting warm. Pet oil has good film strength which other lubes don't have. I use a drill too. Give it a try.
Heat can only be caused by friction which means poor lube.

This tip was a game changer for me.
Also I do lube the cutter a bit with oil or imperial.

You are probably cutting to fast and trying to cut to much off at one time. I go real slow and take my time and don't press very hard. And keep things lubed of course.

How tight is it pushing the case onto turner mandrel using your fingers. Is is difficult to rotate the case on the turner mandrel by hand without contacting the blade?
I turn 50-100 cases @ about 4/min in one setting when making 20 VTs out of 5.56s before the monotony sets in. Making 500-1000 takes it's toll.
I turn them on a Bridgeport with K&M tooling so the setup is probably different than most.
I dip each case neck in cutting oil so the ID and OD is lubed and I blow chips off the tooling every 2-3 cases.
Tooling does not overheat using the cutting oil and air. However the proper expanding mandrel is still imperative. I like the case snug on the turning mandrel but not tight.
