with N133 powder was would max load be with a 68 graib flat base bullet.barrel is a 1 in 14 twist 6 grove hart.action is a stole.am shooting 28.2 and even with varing setinting depths it is holding .3 5 shot groups.i would like to go up 2 grains at a time.i see that some shoot 29.0 to 30.0 with this bullet.any thoughts on this .

28.2 is vv max for n133. I know a guy who was shooting so hot the pockets were gone in 1 firing after fireforming. Grt calculated his load at over 70,000 psi. When he saw the pressure, he stopped doing it.

A good majority of competitive benchrest shooters running lapua brass are running 30.0+grains of 133 but brass life suffers compared to the lighter loads. Alpha brass seems to hold up well with these loads but Norma doesn’t.

Do the math on a 68 grn bullet at 3450fps out of a 21 inch barrel.
There are multitudes of Benchrest Shooters doing that every week end.
The only thing that suffers is primer pockets. But sooner or later you have to make the decision…..”do I want to shoot competitively, or save brass”?

29.9 to 30.2 is considered by many to be the hot tuning node. Your 28.2 is a very mild, low node. There's also a middle node around 29.0, give or take a few tenths.
Take your best seating depth and shoot every .2 grains from 28.7 up to 30.1 and see what looks best. Pick the best and see if it repeats.
The max load mentioned above is VV's recommendation for a factory gun. Your custom Stolle action can easily handle the hot loads that competitive shooters use.

But once again, if you are shooting in competition, you have to decide whether you want to be competitive, or want to save the barrel.
Shooters shoot in the upper load window for a reason.
Jackieschmit, not being a wise Azz but why is it that competition guys run such high pressure loads?? They could run an improved case, etc if it was velocity related but assuming that’s not reason. Is the ES, SD, etc more consistent when running 60-70K psi loads or what?? Do higher pressures just group better? Trying to broaden my knowledge; better understand the why??

Learned this lesson recently as well. Shooting the same configuration and thought I was smart at topping out with 28gr of N133. Then asking questions and talking to other competitors and learn I am woefully under powered. Seems everyone was using 30 grain N133 behind the 68 bullet.
Was 28 grain a full case? Yep
Should I have researched more and seen what others were doing who were successful? Yep
Live and learn. Just like any hobby, nothing is cheap if you want to be good at it.

You obviously don’t shoot the 6ppc in competition. If you want to win, you must go where others are afraid! Nothing more needs to be said….
Your bullets will show you what they like.
It’s not always true, but most of the time, that’s the formula.
Remember, in competition, no one is shooting factory stuff. Everything is custom actions, hand swagged bullets and high end scopes. Brass, powder and primers are just expendables.
If you just want to punch holes in targets at your local range, don’t worry about loads that are used in competition.

I get all the custom chambers, wildcats, tight necks, blended powders, etc. Looking for any little advantage when competing. I don’t shoot competitively but just trying to get why higher pressure loads are preferred vs going to a slightly larger case that will shoot same velocity but at a lower pressure… guess it’s like race horses, race cars, etc , don’t give away your secret especially if it’s working well …
