Well I Did It

Down the rabbit hole I go! I ordered a CZ 457 Varmint MTR. I'm hoping to win the barrel lottery with decent wood. I've got a Vortex Diamondback Tactical 6-24x50 FFP to top it with. I plan to shoot in 50yd and 100yd factory matches with it. Would it be best to use a Picatinny rail or mount the scope with 11mm dovetail rings?

DIP rail is high quality and much cheaper--the way it mounts is great also the Area 419 uses Tiny Torx screws that tend to strip and the bubble level is not easy to check when you are on the gun like you would imagine
DIP for the win and MDT worth a look too

Congrats ! You will Love that rifle
Lost Nation has fast ship on $28 extended mag release lever--legal in ARA well worth it
EGW in PA has the best profile on a bolt knob and it is cheap
Those three items and you are ready

Bores are Tight we all us e a 20 cal cleaning rod and 20 cal jag

Test stock screw tq for best results many like 20 front and back--as little as 3-4 in lbs diff can make it shoot knockout groups or so so groups--test yours but 19-2o in lbs works on many

bedding one is popular and legal ARA but we have 5 non bedded that shoot lights out
They have plastic pillars==they are pretty tough but do not over tq your action screws and damage them!

The bolts get smoother the more you shoot them--it can help to smooth up the bottom side where the serial numbers are--they are dot printed and rough in a critical area--you can run the bolt back and forth putting heavy pressure on it in different directions as you work it back and forth and that will usually smooth a bolt up or at least get it started

A trigger spring and careful adjustment will get you far for $10 the sear adjustment is very important on final results The trigger pin with E clips on Ebay is pricey at $25 but well worth it

Do NOT get solvent like Gunscrubber on the mag well it will dissolve and ruin it--be very careful about getting any solvent on the plastic mag well

You are in for a Good Time! Most seem to like Lapua and SK over Eley

You are going to love it. I put a pic rail from EGW on mine with 20 MOA built in. I also just added a Bradley leather cheek riser, $$$, that makes cheek weld much more consistent. Do get a 20 cal rod. Mine CAN shoot ragged holes at 50 with some lots of Center-X and SK Match. SK Long Range Match has been better than CX at 100. Problem is finding it in stock, just as it is with CX. You are going to love it, regardless of the wood lottery...

I posted on RFC regarding my MTR Varmint factory rifle in their online match. 2nd ARA unlimited target shot with it, at 25 yards to qualify, netted a perfect 2500 with 17X. The chances are pretty good that you'll have a good one, but there is still that "chance" when buying a factory rifle. Good luck, and look forward to seeing your target pics to come!

25 yds make most guns look good.
You should try it with a factory setup sometime. I think 3 have cleared this target out of 10 or so, so far. The unlimited guys don't seem to have an easy time either with it. But they should be drilling the center out on every shot having an unlimited setup, it's crazy. :D

Show me a 50 yd target ? That's where most games are played.
I will. I'm moving up it next now that I've qualified for the match rules to advance. Looking forward to see what it can do. My VPT has been able to score in the upper 230s to a high score of 240 at our matches on the USBR target, I'm just hoping this MTR Varmint in it's factory condition can do similarly. If not, oh well, it's still doing well for a factory rifle.

I've been shooting local fun matches for 5 years, for fun. I've shot ARA targets, USBR, and IBS targets at 50, 75, and 100. This is just a new rifle that is like the OP has, that I'm stating he has a good chance of having one that will shoot well, and it's on its maiden trips to the range and seems to be doing well, so I shot in the RFC online match with it in the factory class. Rules state you must clear the ARA target at 25 yards before you can move on to the 50 yard round. That's it. Not sure what the issue is here.
