Which suppressor?

Urban

Over on the longriflehunter there was a thread on the SCYTHE suppressor.
Several guys had failed and sent them. A couple guys sent them in more than once.
They love them.
The company replaces them quickly.

Hal

I'm sure all brands have failed at some point. I'm sure they have made a few. I'm also sure their are people that push the design limits... As with all things.

I suspect if the regulations come off the price will drop dramatically. Then even a solvent trap may be an option.
I believe prices will increase a lot since demand will jump up and manufacturers will not be able to crank out suppressors fast enough to meet demand.
I suspect dealers will stock up, increase prices and panic buyers will pay a ton. Then the game will become a long wait for a manufacturer to produce so you can purchase or pay more to get it sooner from a dealer that has stock and is over charging.

A while back my friends all had YHM units, I know the Dead air Sandman is a Beast,

I want some suggestions as to what I should be looking for in a suppressor.

I want titanium and a good tight interchangeable locking system.

This will be shared on 6mm, 22 cal, 20 cal and 17 cal bolt action rifles, biggest being a 22 Creedmoor AI, the others being BR case variants.

I’ll probably go with a Dead air Sandman 30 cal on my AR, that should do it, I think…

I’m open to suggestions before dropping coin so I can make a good couple of decisions, any help is always appreciated.

Phil.
From reading through the posts, I don’t think anyone can agree on one suppressor that’s best. Everyone will defend their purchase and each persons host will be different. I suggest you take a look at the 2023 and 2024 silencer summit results and pew science rankings. Any suppressor in the top 10 spots will be good. I think that a multi cal suppressor will be marginal and I believe a suppressor should be purchased for the caliber you intend to shoot. Also, a suppressor for a bolt action will have a different design than one designed for semi auto use.

Silencer summit:

Pew Science (you can filter by caliber):

Lawrence, when manufacturers don't have to deal with government intrusion and can sell a product without any excessive regulations you will see many more companies making them and prices will fall. As you say they may go up in the short term, but I don't think it will last. Do a search on solvent traps, these are makers with all but one toe in the market, as soon as cans are deregulated they will be making finished products in a few days. I had no idea how many solvent traps were titanium tubes front and end caps ready to go. I thought they were all aluminum cheap kits.

I suppose I forgot to include the polymer 80 or ghost gun of the suppressor market!
The solvent traps I am aware of (aluminum, steel, and titanium), and that folks were putting together in their backyards are not what I would consider a “suppressor”. They knock the edge off just like a pillow, oil filter, potato or many other household items do. They are somewhat like a pistol brace. I’m sure “solvent traps” will resurface for the budget minded.

As the bill is written currently, silencers will remain a "firearm" to the ATF. So they need to have a serial #, go through an FFL and be manufactured by a company with a type 7 Manufacturer of Firearms license.

Let me know what you decide on, suppressing a 20 cal ,204 might be challenging as it's a blaster, probably still need ear protection in the field.I'm trying to decide myself.

I only use and recommend thunderbeast I won’t touch Dead Air after the Sierra 55 fiasco cans literally disintegrating even if you gave it to me

Been using one on my 20FB pushing 32gr pills @ 4000+ fps through my SandmanTI- no protection required, it’s even quicker than standard 22LR. rifle unsuppressed

I like the concept of the unknown munitions over the barrel suppressor but don't have any experience with it.

I own three YHM suppressors. First was a steel 30 caliber Phantom QD, the second a 30 caliber Ti Phantom QD and the third a YHM Stinger that can be taken apart for cleaning (very important for 22LR cans). The older one of those 30 cal cans is around 13 years old and has bunches of rounds thru it. The Ti is at least 10 year old and has stayed together with untold amount of everything from 22-250 to 300WM. For the AR I have a 15 year old Gemtech that has been tortured to the point of being so hot it melted things it wasn't supposed to.
Suppressor failures do happen to even the best ones on the market. All the guys that have recommended TBAC here probably just haven't heard form several of my friends who had complete failures of those too.
I see now that Ruger has gotten into the game. Wonder what they will be like?
Also, I notice no one has recommended the Banish 30 and I'm not sure why. I believe it is a modular unit that allows for different calibers up to 30 caliber.

Here’s a 5 shot group I just recently shot with a DDC Wolf Hunter. I measured it at .081 and the software got it at .079. Not bad for a “dead air knockoff” as someone called it.

If I didn’t use DDC, I’d probably go with a Thunder Beast. Great people. Their cans have amazing tolerances. The only problem I have with TBAC is that they’re not very quiet. The industry caught up in that department.

I wish we could have them here in Australia but no they to scary . Only certain contractors are allowed them and only In 2 states .

I feel bad for you, they are life changing. Someone asked me after I got my 1st one what I thought, I said I was mad I didn't buy one 20 years earlier. I own 5 now.
