Rebarrel savage 6br

I have a new savage 6br I’m thinking about getting a new barrel if it doesn’t shoot lights out from the start. Question is to rebarrel in 6br , 6 dasher or???
I was thinking of bumping it up to 28”
I’d get a barrel from benchmark. Prob the best place I can think of

There’s nothing wrong with straight 6BR, but I prefer a BRA over a Dasher because of the ease in fire forming Lapua brass.

How do you plan to use the rifle? IMO, balance can be an issue with longer barrels. I tend to run 24” with heavy varmint contoured barrels and 26” in light varmint contoured ones.

Your choices are wide open for replacement barrels. You can have a smith chamber and thread a Bartlein or Kreiger, or you can buy a quality prefit from any number of manufacturers. I’ve personally had excellent results from Excalibur, Criterion, and out very own @urbanrifleman.

Just looked through the pics on my phone. I have some more I'll have to look. These are 6br /6bra.

My opinion only YMMD. If you don't plan to shoot any further than you already do, why change. If you plan to stretch out to say 600 yards I would recommend going to the Dasher. Good factory brass available so no fireforming needed. I use my 6BR-Norma for short range BR and my Dasher for 600 yard BR and F-Class. Both are getting close to needing new barrels and I plan to keep the same chambering in both. I will be going from a 1:8 twist in the 6BR to a 1:12, but staying with a 1:8 in the Dasher. I already have a Kreger 1:8 for the Dasher but am still trying to decide on a barrel for the 6BR. Good luck.

Suggest a Pre Fit Criterion Match 6 BRA 28" to 30",.272 No turn neck,.104 t0 .135 freebore,expect Bugholes. or a Krieger Barrel

I guess that you are NOT an optimist!

If you are going to a 12 twist I would think that you will be using the lighter bullets. If that is the case be careful with what freebore you get. I have a 6BR with zero freebore and even then there isn't much bullet in the case with the 64-70 gr bullets. JME

When I rebarreled my 6BR Savage LRPV I went with a Shilen select match 26in bull barrel from Northland Shooter Supply. This is a great barrel, at a great price for a chambered barrel. Probably as good as a button rifle barrel gets. I have won many club matches with it. Highly recommended.
When it comes to the length of the barrel and whether to go 6BR or Dasher it depends on the distance you plan to shoot. In general a 26in 6BR is easily good to 600 yds. If you are going to shoot farther than 600 I would go with the 28 or even 30 if you don’t mind the extra weight. The Dasher has a little more horsepower but comes at the price of a shorter neck. The great thing about Shilen is if you know what bullet you are planning to shoot you can send them a sample dummy round with the bullet seated where you want it (usually with the boat tail junction of the bullet just above the neck shoulder junction of the case) and they can throat the chamber to give you the proper free bore. This is important with the Dasher because of the short neck. The other thing is I highly recommend a no turn neck, I have turned a lot of necks in my time but have come to the conclusion that I really don’t see any advantage. Why go through all the extra work.

I had a bunch of 260 Shilen prefits and a AR barrel on a Shilen blank and all of them didn’t disappoint.

The thing I find most advantageous about Savage actions. It is so cheap and easy to swap barrels. For my Savage short action I now have bolt heads for 223, 308 and the ARC/Grendel. That covers a pretty wide assortment of calibers.

Also from shooting a local league I have learned that barrels are also a consumable!

How is fire forming BRA easier than Dasher? You just seat a hard jam in the lands and go shoot.

I had a Criterion...once. couldn't get it to shoot with anything. For a little bit more money, call James at Northland and get a Shillen match.
