WHERE TO SEND WOOD TO MAKE A SEMI INLETTED STOCK

Before you send it to anybody you need to check the moisture content. Josh could probably tell you a good number. 6% was sticking in my mind the google says between 6% and 8%.

I used Show-Me Gunstocks out of Missouri. They made me a Remington 788 stock for a 6mm. They even left the RH inletting of the bolt out of the equation so I could have a lefty bolt cut. I bought a cheap grade of walnut but I'm more than happy with it.

None of the other "big name" replicators would stray from their RH versions. IIRC, Show-Me, left the stock slightly oversized so I could put a heavier barrel in it. Very pleased with the workmanship and aggressive pricing.

Call Donnie and tell him what your after using your wood.

Jason P @ X-Ring does this kind of work but like some others he's restricted on the slab size (s). Too short and they won't work. He does hunting and BR / F-Open style stocks.

I have a piece for walnut I would like made into a semi inletted stock. Who does this work?
Scott
I not an expert but ( IMO ) you need someone that has the CNC program you desire and the right machine to handle the material, I believe a 4 axis only does one side at a time.

Someone please correct me if I’m off on this.

No sir, a person with a stock duplicator will work and others just do all of the carving by hand.
True, a stock duplicator will do the Job but the ones I’ve seen were very rough and needed a lot of work to complete the job and sure it can be done by hand but the CNC machine does a much better job. The machine my guy uses only does one side at a time which is what I was referring to.

Not disagreeing with you, but some duplicators are very very close. Some look as if a beaver did them.

I have a CNC and a stock duplicator .. and I build computer controlled robotics for my day job and I can assure you a duplicator "can" do amazingly tight tolerances but only if someone has taken the time to find all the things that contribute to the "slop". It's not going to be all in 1 or 2 spots .. I have a radarcarve that's collecting dust but I think I made 12 or 13 modifications
To it

A beaver with a over bite. Lol

@JFrank depending on how tight they run thier final pass the overrun marks from CnC can be a PITA to get completely gone.
FWIW...
I start with 80 grit on a lot of CnC cut stocks
Wow . I have spent the last several years prototyping and getting ready to start offering stocks .. I find that shocking, I would be ashamed .. are they stocks being sold for dirt cheap ..or supposed higher end work ?

All of them....
Some more than others, as some stock makers sand before shipping to customers, but will still have overrun marks.
Stock makers are paid to produce a stock, not prep it 100% for finishing unless they are finishing it as a final product.
My opinion of course
