Making a Blaine Eddy plate - input?

Being a wildcatter for many years, I'll stick with dies and mandrels. Very
seldom that I do a simple neck up or down cat. Mine will always involve
a deep draw on it's body......The plate as mentioned; you better use some
type of positive stop to keep it from getting away from you. That would be
a big ouch.......

Got ya' beat John......LOL
Nice long neck to support the bullet.

Made this a while back, still needs some engineering work.

Below is a picture of what I did. It was done when you could buy used bushings for a reasonable price, unlike today.

Modified dies: the two on the left are bushing dies that have been cut down to accept extremely short cartridges.

They will work with longer cartridges as well since they are only meant for reducing the neck diameter a small

amount at a time. The die on the right is a modified neck die for .224 caliber but does not accept bushings.

That's a very nice set up that you have, it reminds me of the 21st century neck sizing die or the fbike die set. I had tried contacting both Paul and Francis to obtain their set and neither responded back.

So a bench top drill press wouldn't cut it. I had borrowed the dies to form my 17-357 Max cases. I have to form some more brass and the gunsmith I got them from has since passed on. I've been collecting different dies and cutting them down for the different steps. It's a long process using dies.

I tried a cheap harbor freight bench drill press and it didn't have the power to do it. A bridgeport had plenty so something in between would work.

Thank you for sharing that, it has a few more sizes than when he did the video. If you have a chance would you be able to share the hole spacing and any other measurements you care to take? From the video the largest caliber that he had labelled was 24 - so it would be interesting to know what size holes the rest were. You were lucky to know him, seems like an interesting guy.
Left to right holes are on 3/4" centers, up and down 11/16" centers......this plate, which may have been an early prototype. You're doing one for yourself and spacing can be whatever you want. I would use 1/2" plate though.

In '91 I was building a shop behind the house and needed a 1000' slab. Mike Bellm had done some barrels for me and was friends with Blaine, who was a cement guy. Mike got me in touch with him. Blaine did the pour and finishing. Over the years we bcame pretty good friends. His favorite wintertime activity was hunting coyotes for fur. Winters he'd go up into the the most rugged and remote areas of northern Nevada, where you better have 2 spare tires along, and spend a week at a time living in a tent and shooting coyotes all day, in the snow. He'd do this all winter. He was a small caliber guy and 17's did least pelt damage on coyotes The favorite chambering became a PPC case necked to .17 and shortened .100". His pelts were perfect and brought top dollar. I always thought Blaine could have been a Davy Crockett or Daniel Boone incarnate, he had the same spirit. Yes I was lucky to have him as friend. A really good guy and one of the best people I ever knew.

Thank you for the measurements ackman, hoping to have most of what's required to get started next weekend - although it looks like FedEx is already delaying delivery of the drill bits.

Thread a shell holder- any will do , they no that hard..use a bolt, threaded in w/ head cut off..

Get a cartridge holder for a drill..

I’ve got some brass coming- plan on using the plate to neck them to 20 cal, from 22… then blow them out to 40* shoulders
Redding has .223 to .221 form dies. I've used them a lot, and then down to .17. they work fine. Its been quite awhile,, but when going from .22 to 17 I believe the 1st stop is at .20.

Just gotta size ppc brass down only- no sizing required

Plan on blowing a 40* shoulder on it- then

I have that die, (221 form die)
Also cut my own 22-250 die down for other forming..ppc cases & BR cases

I don't recall if it was here, or another forum - but I've seen a few posts about this neck sizing plate recently. Being relatively new to the game this was the first I've heard of it, and after surfing the interwebs for more time than I'd like to admit - I didn't find much detailed discussion regarding the design. It got me thinking that sounds like a fun project and will help me rationalize purchasing a 115pc drill bit set that I've been wanting.

For those that haven't seen the video:

So, my notes while watching the video, he has 21 holes and a 35 degree chamfer. He was recommending using 1/2 steel plate and adding a 30 degree chamfer on the opposite side. This is what he listed
.336, .329, .325, .305, .302, .295, .282 (24 cal), .276, .269 (22 cal), .248, .242 (20 Cal), .234, .220, .211, .205, .204 - noted as probably not necessary, .202, .199 (17 cal), .195, .180, .169 (14 cal).

Does anyone have one of his plates, or one that you fabricated, that could comment on any changes/improvements? I am wondering if there's a real difference in results between steel and aluminum for the plate, mainly because I have some aluminum scraps.

I don't have a specific need at this time, but I'm always looking for a new to me rifle in an interesting caliber - so this seems like something good to have on hand. Posting here in 'wildcat' sub hoping for most input.
thanks wknd for this info. i never thought of doing this - this way. i dont have any need to size down brass shoulders only at this time. the brass sizing i want to do involves pushing back the shoulder. may need this someday though

Once I get a plate made - I need to find a new loading project to try this out. But I bought this die which puts a 35 degree shoulder on any case. It seems interesting in concept. I was hoping to convince him to make one with the through holes for 22 caliber and 17 caliber to make the processing easier. Prices are in AUS so it was actually not too expensive.

So I could set the shoulder with the universal die, then neck down with the plate.

And of course, I understand that form dies exist. I have at least a dozen of them. Just always looking to add options to the toolbox and keep busy while it's too cold for range time

i watched the video.that was interesting. i have been able to make a few 6br brass out of 308 by using differnt FL sizing dies but the failure rate is pretty high. this die that forms the brass to a shallower angle looks like a better idea. i dont think i will want to neck anything under 6mm so i wouldnt need a plate. i may have to try to get one of these dies.

thanks much for all the info

Please let us know if you ever offer these for sale again!

My main Internet would be taking the 44 magnum down to .22 caliber (.22 Stark).
