REM Model 725 sling swivel

My son finally got his Grandpa's elk rifle, ... Rem 725 in 30-06.

I'm getting ready to work up a load, in which I will use a stud mounted bipod for a powder ladder and a bullet seat test.

My problem is the existing sling swivel, which is quite oddball. The post is about an inch long, 0.222 " in diameter with 16 threads in about 3/8" of post. That works out to +/- 42 tpi. What is the proper nomenclature for this post?

This thing might also thread into a nut welded to the underneath of the barrel.

Anyone know of a replacement post to allow a Harris bipod to connect?

We don't want to alter any of the original equipment or stock.

I would guess the thread is 10-32. You can take it to the hardware store and check it with a nut. If it is 10-32 then quitk detatch sling swivel should work.

Good advice, ... but already attempted. This is a true oddball. Even went to a gunshop, who thought it was a 1/4"-32. Nope!

Hoping someone with a 725 will respond.

To proceed you must know if the swivel does screw into the nut on the barrel or if it attaches to the stock. Most that attach to the stock use a T nut to provide threads for the swivel to thread into. If that is the method used you can remove the t nut and get one for a more modern rifle that has the thread size you need. If it threads into the barrel you will need to figure out the thread size and make a bolt or all thread to screw into the barrel and pass through the stock and have enough length to use a nut or wing nut to attach the bipod. You could also get the bolt that you need to attach the bipod and drill a new hole through the forearm and mortice in a new t nut the right size. If placed close enough to the original hole the bipod could hid the original

Numrich has not mention of a swivel in their list of parts for a 725.

The swivel is odd sized on the 725. I believe you are correct with 42 pitch threads. The nut is pointy and larger than the newer type also. I replaced the front swivel on a neighbors 725 with a newer QD type swivel and stud. I used epoxy to hold everything in place. If you want to keep it so that it can be returned to original, better know someone that can machine a new front stud for you, it won't be cheap.

This inherited rifle is not "pristine" by any means. Rode hard, .. but never put up "wet".

If it has been rode hard and put away wet, just remove the old swivel and nut and replace it with an Uncle Mikes detachable set-up. The new nut will be loose, thus the need to use epoxy. It is easy to do, just put the nut into the existing hole, screw in the swivel stud (I used release agent on the stud threads in case they ever want to remove it for some reason), make sure the swivel aligns properly and fill the excess space around the nut with epoxy to hold the nut in place.

I can't say I've ever seen a stud threaded to a barrel on a Remington (except for a barrel band).

The thread size is 7/32 x 40 for the front sling swivel.

And to go in a new direction: Shoot off a front rest for load work to avoid the bipod bounce. Leave the sling swivel off for the test.

Paperpuncher was kind enough to fab me up a set of studs off the original unit specs in exchange for , I assume, a chance to clone those original sling swivels. What a nice Gent!

Joshb, great suggestion for load work, but we will eventually need the bipod for the elk season. I can't count on my fingers all of the elk I've killed using a Harris bipod.

Well OK then!! I “assumed” you’d be shooting offhand after climbing a 2 mile uphill trail with a 60 pound pack!
