Suggested magnification for 300 yd shooting.

Hello, what is the desired magnification for primarily 300 yd shooting. I presently shoot an old weaver t24 , but looking to buy another for another build, any suggestions?
Ron

It depends on your budget. I use an older fixed March 50 and a variable 10-60. They cost me $1100 to $1500.

I just purchased a Weaver fixed 36x in the classifieds. It is going on an SR-BR gun, which will also do the trick for knocking holes in paper out to 300 yards.

Regards
Rick

Thanks Rick, not wanting to spend a ton on the scope but the old weavers are good for their price. Had looked at the 36x but didn’t know if mirage would be my issue at that magnification,

What kind of 300 yard shooting?? There’s a big difference depending on what you’re doing. I shoot an occasional 300 benchrest match and I like 50-55x. For ground squirrels and rock chucks 12-24 works fine. So what your doing matters a lot..

Good variables are the ticket for helping with mirage. But with those, you pretty much get what you pay for......Best of luck. Scope shopping can be a bit crazy-making if you can't look through one before you buy it.
Thanks, I have variables for hunting purposes, but most of my shooting is precision shooting. I’m 63 yrs old so I resort to backyard paper punching!

Thanks SWD, at my age(63), I just prefer accuracy shooting at my backyard range, I’m leaning towards a fixed power but was worried that a higher mag scope would give mirage issues.

I'm only slightly younger than you. High power definitely makes mirage worse. Good variables are great for heavy migarge days when you can turn down a bit. Price point is your decision. You can get a used Nightforce 12x42 BR for around $1k. The NF Comp series see through mirage quite a bit better at about twice the price. Used 15x60 Vortex Golden Eagle's run about $1200 used with a lifetime replacement warranty to any owner. Go for a good variable and don't look back!

We aren't getting any younger and nice scopes are a pleasure to use, get the best you can..
Very true. I struggle with a couple of reticles - the Golden Eagle can be tricky under certain light and fine X-hairs are a no no these days. Out of all my scopes - the Sightron Moa2, the March, Kahles and Valdada Recon are the easiest, followed closely with a Burris XTR 2 8-40. The Recon and the Burris are FFP - but as I never use them at low magnification, except when settting up, they work just fine.
