Yes…DEFINITELY a difference. A bonafide Coonass would NEVER put tomato in a gumbo….just wouldn’t happen.

Denys…. I concede…. I’ll have to use a translator since my only Francais is on the vulgar side. My elders did not allow the children to learn French so they could gossip in our presence…true story. We all learned vulgarities, however.

I love your story about your elders refusing to teach you French so they could talk surreptitiously amongst themselves. The fiends.

I experienced similar in my youth. My parents spoke to each other in English when they wanted privacy. That didn't work very well as my siblings and I learned English at a very young age, what with TV and radio in both languages. I don't remember a time when I wasn't bilingual, but we knew how to feign ignorance. Parents can be so sneaky, but kids are worse. Good times, good times.
