Thanks…..I know I’m biased, but my dad, also named Jackie, will tell you he is no gunsmith, but I’ve been told all my life by many people that he is the finest machinist they have ever known and my older brother who learned the trade from him isn’t far behind. I’ve never seen a machining or even engineering problem that he can’t solve and fix. He retired several years ago and my brother had most of his equipment now but since we have gotten into shooting it has rekindled his desire to fix, make better, and build stuff and I’m thankful to get to witness it and spend this time with him.Nice idea.

He actually did but was curious as to how centered the firing pin hole was so had indicator set up there when I took the picture.Great idea. No need to unnecessary complicate things. This is a good reminder.
The only thing I'd think about doing differently is indicating off the bolt body instead of the firing pin hole.
Perhaps it was centered when made. Perhaps not.
Had the opportunity to move back home 4 years ago and built across the road from him and Mom down in the woods…….youngest child gets off bus at their house every day, so you know she’s spoiled, it has truly been a blessing and I’m very thankful.Cherish it
I love seeing other machinists creativity!, thanks for showing us thisMy dad re-barreled us a couple of Howa 1500’s in 6GT from 308. Now we need bush firing pin hole and grind firing pin diameter for SRP’s…….he was in process of drawing a bolt fixturing jig to make when he decided to try this idea.
I’ll try to get some pictures of his reamer holder/pusher set up next time I get a chance. He’s pretty good at figuring solutions to problems.Clever set up
I’ll ask him….not sure how he held the Howa bolt handle, as you can see in the picture, to thread the recess in the bolt knob and put a threaded insert in to add an extension to the factory one. What I first thought and was hoping is
An easy way of holding a bolt to thread the bolt handle
See if you can see what he comes up with there that is easy and not expensive
Yes I see that now,I’ll ask him….not sure how he held the Howa bolt handle, as you can see in the picture, to thread the recess in the bolt knob and put a threaded insert in to add an extension to the factory one.
Old timer Smith's made a mandrel that threads into the rear of the bolt and used the steady rest, I have done it that way and I have around 5 or so threaded mandrels to fit various bolts. But I am making a Viper style fixture soon.Yes I see that now,
I need to make a fixture, I don't often have lots of free time to spend hours making stuff for myself just to do a few one off jobs ya know.
So am just curious what another person might have done differently.
I have 3 lathes but no Mill yet otherwise would have made a fixture by now.
I currently just hold them in the 4 jaw with brass to protect it and live center at the end of bolt handle.
I thread mine 3/8-24 and am able to get a full thread all the way around (On Rem 700's)
I don't understand why others take it down to 5/16" which merely comrpomises the strength of an area that leverage is being applied to?
Now thats an interesting idea, Thank you!Old timer Smith's made a mandrel that threads into the rear of the bolt and used the steady rest, I have done it that way and I have around 5 or so threaded mandrels to fit various bolts. But I am making a Viper style fixture soon.
Oh sorry, maybe I wasnt very clearI'd suppose it matters what you're needing to do to the bolt. If you're not going to alter the body (sleeves) - I'd hold the body somehow. If I'm going to sleeve it - I want to hold it between centers.
