8 vs. 10x

I am looking at LPVOs for a hunting application and wonder if there is really much difference between an 8X and 10X max.

Thanks.

I'm assuming you're looking at a LPVO for closer range use and in that case, 2x on the top end isn't a big deal. Other differences between the two would probably make the choice for me.

I actually have a 1x red dot on a 45 deg canted offset mount that I would use in addition to the LPVO, That would almost always stay at max magnification

All else being equal (same quality glass, same objective diameter) the 8X will be marginally brighter and have a larger FOV.
Yeah, but only if you compare the 1-8X set at 8X to the 1-10X set at 10X. If both are set at 8X, the exit pupil and the FOV will be the same.

I see, using two optics like that for hunting is outside my wheelhouse. Where you hunt is it a situation where you could be presented with quick shots both short and long or something like that?

Its just to have options and not need to dial a scope down for near critters. In local underbush, rare you get a shot longer than 100yd and often enuf 25 or less.

Current setup, this is a 5x / 1x, but I also got an 8x wondering about a 10x. Also looking at a 10x on the 6 ARC.

Below: 300 HAM'R ... basically a semi auto 30-30 @ 2500 fps :

Jack Oconner said you do not need more than 4x for any big game hunting. Few have more experience than he had. On the other hand I have killed a lot of Pa deer with fixed 12x, in the woods. I like to see. I doubt 30 30 ballistics need 8 or 10 except for counting points. So use what works for you, not others.
