IMR 4166?

Anybody tried this? In what? Wideners has some in stock as well as 4451. It supposedly burns around varget' s burn rate...308, 223, 22-250, 257 Roberts...

It is almost identical to 4064 (4166 is not a coincidence). Reports have been good.

Got a couple pounds on order hopefully coming in next week. Supposed to shoot like Varget and RL-15 with copper fouling reducing properties and not sensitive to temperatures? Seems like a good combination. Hope it works out once I get my F-Class rifle ready for load testing.

According to Hodgdons burn rate chart, 4166 sits directly between AA 2495 and IMR 4064.
4451 sits directly between IMR 4350 and H4350

Reference IMR's new 4166 powder, for those who have been thinking of trying it with .308 Winchester loads.

My 1 in 10 Criterion barreled .308 had been shooting the 175 SMK's with IMR 4064 great at 100yds. but, i disliked throwing the charges with those huge sticks, understood it to be temp sensitive, and it's kind of dirty.

i was therefore on the look out for something to replace it without the negatives and not having to depend on Varget availability. also, in my rifle, Varget shot well but not as good as i thought it should. i saw some buzz on the forums here about IMR's new 4166 and decided to give it a try.

long story short, after a quick ladder test last weekend, (at 100 yds unfortunately, welcome to South Florida's long range shooting issues) i took it out today with 175 SMK's on a perfect light wind day and was very, very happy with the results. shot two different loads (20 rounds, all 5 shot groups) and the worst was just over a half inch, with the other three groups at .25", .29", and .305".

next weekend, we are making the 4 hour drive to the nearest public range that you can shoot out to a thousand, and am going to give this combo a try at 600 yards.

I just started using imr 4166 in my 308 with great results. I'm using 43.2gr of 4166 with a 168 Amax 1 in 10 twist 26" bartline barrel. velocity is 2705 . It does just as good at a 1000yd

Ironically I had to complete the fire forming of some Dasher cases that got out of spec through my stupidity playing with a sizing die. Used 4166 and jammed some 107 SMK's in .010. Set up at the 600 yard gongs after our 1,000 yard match today.

Now this is a cold, clean BAT that I did NOT shoot at the match. First shot was lower than expected. Actually it was expected. 24 more shots later and I swear only two did not hit the 1" bolt in the center of that little gong. Unreal how well the combination shot. I was just wanting to get rid of the powder.

Maybe I should re-think?

Varget meters well? Wonder if THAT Varget is different from the Varget I have. Mine is a lot like having to stack "presto logs".

I'll just add a safety warning to this old thread. If you have any old Enduron powders, check them! There have been several reports of IMR4166 in particular degrading and even spontaneously combusting. I had a pound of 4166 that went bad. Opened the cap and a whisp of brownish fumes came out. It had an unbelievably foul odor.

Might explain why it was dropped. Mine never did have any issues. 4166 shot amazing in my rifles.

I've still got some around. It shoots well in a 45-70 with light/moderate loads and a 350gr Berry's bullet.

I use 4166 in my 223 AR15 with Hornady 75 Gr. BTHP bullets. Both the cannelure and non-cannelure bullets. Get a little more velocity with the cannelure ones. 22 grs. with CCI 400 primers Starline brass with no pressure signs. Might not win any contests or matches but if you are a good shot, it will still shoot sub moa.
