Help me decide on Rem 700 30-06 rebarrel cartridge.

What about a 284 win.? My brother in law built one and im very impressed with accuracy. About same ballistics as my 6.5 prc same weight bullet but his is 7mm. If i did not have my prc id look at building one
Hasn't brass more or less gone the way of the dodo bird?

A good plan for dies would be using Redding 25-06A.I. dies as donors. If your brass has more than .001-.0015 thickness variation, I'd stick with a fixed neck dimension die over a bushing die. -Al
I have no problems neck turning.
The question being, is the 6.5 brass OD able to enter the 25 caliber bushing die?
I think its possible, what do you think, is it possible??

Update, I just checked with Redding. That die will not work at the neck.

I know it won't work with the existing neck diameter....that's why I referred to them as "donor dies".

All that's needed is to enlarge the neck diameter to what you want it to be (on a fixed dimension die). That is easily done with a carbide chucking reamer followed by a light lapping. Or you can lap it open using a barrel lap. If you want to use a bushing die, it gets even easier as you're not going to remove as much material from the neck area.

I have never understood the allure of wildcat cartridges for anything that might be used on a hunting trip somewhere. Try finding ammo at the local Walmart for a wiz bang AI non SAAMI whatever..

My vote is 280 REM using a modern reamer that allows you to take advantage of today’s heavy for caliber, high BC bullets.

Second choice being 25-06 of the same premise as above.
Well, 280AI is a SAMMI chamber and a basic AI chamber (not changing bullet diameter) shoots the parent cased ammo perfectly safe and often times incredibly accurate.

I'm almost to that point.
Redding said the 6.5-06AI dies should be getting sent out in a couple of months. I'm not holding my breath.
I believe I was calling on a 06'improved Type S FL sizer and was informed it would be a couple months and about $275.
Figured I'd leave my 06 alone and shoot it as is, having the mauser in 280ai was good enough.
Although...
A fresh 280ai barrel for the Remington would be pretty sweet.

Under 400 yards? Do like I am doing on my Sedgeley Springfield; a 35 Whelen. It's my gap cartridge between my 300 Magnums and 375 N&H...
I just bought 200 new cases here last month. SAAMI approved, so dies and headstamped brass are available.

There were a couple of guys in Colorado maybe late 80’s to early 90’s who were fooling around with 1 mile, military was too but ya never heard much about it, darn few civilians.

As I recall they started off with 6.5-06. Then went to the AI later on. Seems there was not enough gain for all the extra cost and work involved.

I had a 30-06AI for a short time. It shot well enough, but, no glory for a 150-165 grain bullet, more powder to equal a standard O6 speed. I won’t say it shined, but 180-220 showed some gain, but not what I had hoped for.

280AI, if you want what all the hype was back in the day, do research on what early guys were doing to get what they were, as far as loads. When they SAMMI’d it the pretty much castrated it because of pressure.

Opps, after all that forgot, my vote is for a straight up 35 Whelan. I have had pleasure and opportunity to play with and work up various mouse to moose loads for three in years past. IMHO, another old classic highly looked over by the boutique crowd. Lots of data for cast and jacketed from 125-???.
Great big case with a dose of 2400 or unique and a pistol HP at moderate speed is a hoot of a bigbore varmint rig.
