Stock finish protector during cleaning

I've always just used a rag over the butt of my rifle while cleaning, but I've seen some fancy leather ones in videos and behind the benches when I drive past the SR/BR shooters. I have lots of leather of various types and tans and really should make myself a nice one that won't let solvents through.

If you use a nice one, is the back (stock) side lined? Weighted on the side skirts? Anything more than a pre-folded piece of leather? Lamb, goat, horse, cow hyde? Veg, brain, chrome tanned?
Protektor sells them. Raw leather on the bottom and weighted with sand on the edges. The dark brown and pink leather ones bleed so just go with the plain old yellowish leather ones they make. We have 4 of them.

Why send money on specially treated leather! Rags don't cost a thing, especially worn out Jeans!!! Cut out the legs so the back side is up on the stock!! Spray a heavy coat of SCOTCH GUARD ON THE OUTSIDE OF JEANS!! Solvent will break it down with time and if you see spots, throw it away and use the other leg of the jeans!!

Hey Wild Bill!!! Careful with that exclamation key!! Don't want to wear it out!!! Lol!

I have a lot of leathers in stock already, not going to spend money on any. I'm also not a fan of Scotch guard (or Teflon), and try to avoid contact with chemicals where I reasonably can. Wax works exceptionally well in many applications. Silicone is another great choice.

Though I do appreciate yours and everyone's comments(!!!)

Never thought about Silicon! Great Idea! Thanks! Exclamation!!!!!

Alex, This is what I'm using and it's real nice. No lining, it's oil tanned leather and works well. I was going to make one and he posted them for sale at the right time,LOL. I don't know if he is still selling them but the photo's will give you an idea so you can stitch one up since you have the leather.

I just lay a micro fiber over butt when cleaning.
Everything i do has this on it, I'll spray the detailer on a microfiber for maintenance, I've waxed it twice in 8 months. Super slick!!

Parafin wax is what I usually use to treat good leather items I have made. Melt it down in a pot to a low boil, drop in the leather for about 5 minutes and pull it out and let dry. Makes a great finish like oil tanned. And looks great too.

I just use a tube sock. It's soft and the top is stretchy and hugs the stock. It goes clear up to the tang. I put it on and then insert the bore guide. Works great. There are always a sock that lost it's mate. Toms

I am old school - I just use an old towel folded over so there is two layers between the bore-guide and the stock.
When the towel starts to show a bit of grime I throw it in the washer - it seems to me that as shooters we tend to overthink things or think we have to have some piece of specialized item.
