The Maxberg Magnum

After the Savage AXIS build in 300WSM the "Smacksys" I decided to do one on a friends.243 Mossberg Patriot.

I dug around my pile of barrels and found a nice heavy profile .308 barrel that I chambered in 300wsm and threaded for the Mossberg (Same as a Savage) and cut muzzle threads for brake.
The Mossberg bolt head was the primary issue as it had a standard bolt face. If this was a Savage I would have just ordered a Magnum bolt head but no such luck on these Mossberg's. So I took the bolt head apart and set it up in the lathe. I had PLENTY of meat to open it to the magnum size bolt face.
I put the bolt back together and found the Savage 110 extractor to fit and work perfectly with the Magnum case. These rifles seem to have a lot of compatible parts with Savage, but NOT the bolt heads themselves. While putting the extractor detent ball back in the bolt face I shot three of them to outer space never to be seen again, grrrrr. Ordered more...

Now I have the barrel on the action and head spaced. I am going to have to inlet the Factory Mossberg stock for this barrel but the build is getting close. This rifle uses a plastic removable magazine that should be trivial to modify for the 300wsm cartridge.

I have included a teaser of the Mossberg and a picture of the Axis 300wsm I did last year. I will update once the build is complete (Waiting on more of those DAMN detent balls to arrive) I ordered 200 of them basterds.

I think I will name this The Maxberg Magnum

So you turned down a heavy profile barrel so you could use a nut, instead of just doing a shouldered barrel?

Inquiring minds want to know "why"?

I did not have to turn it down at all for the nut, the barrel nut fit perfect over the non threaded barrel section. It was originally a nut barrel so I just put it back original, plus I kinda like nut barrels, they shoot every bit as accurate as shouldered barrels,( assuming you know how to build them, machining, lapping the nut and lug for a perfect square match up to the receiver face), I have proved time and again. So easy to set headspace or change barrels if I want. The barrel is still plenty heavy enough. I also only torque my barrel nuts to 35ftlbs, I find it ridicules how tight barrels are installed on factory guns, way to much stress induced is my thinking. I could be wrong on all points but until I see otherwise it is what I know :)

I did just build a 7mm-08 on a Mossberg action for my son, he wanted to delete the nut so I chambered the new barrel .015 short and finished by hand once installed on the receiver, Either way works if everything is machined true and square.

A ball of steel shot (don’t recall the size) is a perfect replacement detent ball for the Remington 783. Don’t ask me how I know.

All finished up. Cerakoted todayfree floated barrel, and glassed in front lug. The to my knowledge first 300wsm Mossberg Patriot.
