Scales

Something I have found helpful. For my most used loads, I will take a washer or nut of similar weight but over and file off material until I get it exactly to the charge weight required ( ex. 34.50gr ). I then use this as my check weight for that load. It is much better than using a Generic 20gr or 50gr check weight and hoping your good at something in between..

What’s your budget? Whats your time worth? I like taking 8 seconds to between pours.

V3/ ingenuity. And patiently awaiting the ingenuity thrower. Tools that make the process easier and faster. Like the Henderson trimmer. Or airplane vs horse.

I'd rather take the horse, or even a mule vs dealing with the TSA and other air travel bs.

Of course a good part of my younger life was making a living with both horse/mule so I'm a bit biased.

I love the FX120i, but to be clear it's not a scale, it's a balance and there's a difference. I still have my old beam scale and also a little cheap pocket scale I use to spot check stuff that doesn't need to be super accurate or sort bullets, weigh H2o case volume, etc. The electronic ones are just faster to use, that's all.

Air travel sucks! I bet you get my point though.

Been using the same RCBS 10-10 scale for just about 37 years and am quite fond of it. The thing is a workhorse, it has fed every rifle I've owned over that time, and now the pistols as well. It is a bit slow and you have to watch moving the scale as it can change your zero. Alas, I was saddened to see that it has been discontinued.

So, I'll be watching this thread for recommendations on a manual charge thrower, just to speed things up a bit.

Perhaps your comment is accurate.
There are far more threads about troubleshooting/issues with electronic scales on this forum than with troubleshooting/issues with balance scales.
My comments are accurate but so is your observation! The issue with electronic scales is that all electronic devices are subject to drift. True, some more than others. It is an easy thing to manage. The other issue is not understanding response time and hysteresis. The latter two are factors, especially when speed of charging becomes a factor. One issue I recently saw was a poster thought something was wrong when powder was trickled onto the scale and the reading would jump, say from 40.1 to 40.3 then settle back to 40.2. He didn't realize that powder had inertia that the scale had to absorb that showed as weight as it hit the pan.

Lee scoops and trickle up

Nice ..... congrats.

How much did your groups improve when you went to an electronic scale ?

Ty, not sure if I can put a number on it, I believe electronic scale is just a small part of this rather large and complicated puzzle

Or Lee perfect Powder Measure and trickle up! The newer one comes with a bottler adapter that lets you use a 1 lb bottle so no dumping into an additional hopper. Works for up to about 70gr I think. I have an older one, a Lyman 55, and an RCBS Quick Change. The Lee probably throws the most consistent charges.

The Lee really is very consistent! It's one of the best deals going.

I have a chargemaster lite and a creedmoor scale. I use both at the same time. For benchrest or f class, why not? However, im surprised with the consistency of the rcbs. I think it makes very little difference in a 6 creed size case. Some difference in 223 case. A lot in a hornet case. I have a ton of free time so I trickle on the creedmoor most the time, but I don't see much difference when I dont.

The biggest benefit is being able to check the scales against eachother when one is drifting and pissing me off. If you think the rcbs is annoying, wait till you are worried about another decimal place drifting!

My reloading room faces west in las vegas. I usually load in the afternoon. When the house is 72 and its 115 the scales drive me crazy. No matter how long.

Honestly, I gained nothing going from my Parker tuned beam scale to a fx 120i. I even broke down some old rounds that were loaded for rifles that I didn’t have anymore and checked them weights on the fx 120i. To say that I was surprised at the accuracy and consistency of my tuned beam scale would be an understatement.
Same here, Love my Parker tuned beam scale !
