Metal finish...

A couple years ago (before my fall and Spinal Fracture Injury), I wanted to build a switch barrel rifle to take to Africa for a DG hunt. Mauser FN 98 action for peace of mind (Cape Buffalo) in 375 H&H) in thick brush. A second barrel (skip the Customs issues) in 300H&H. That is only one rifle; my .500 NE 3" double would be the other.

A good friend gunsmith, did the metal work. He does NOT do stock work, so I have a 90% inletted Walnut blank. All of the metal is in the white.

Brings me to the point: Cerakote is very durable, and I have a good friend at Church who will do it all at a reasonable cost. Proper Bluing is expensive, and somewhat problematic finding a quality workman.
Bluing obviously has greater value when I sell this rifle. I may die first, I am 75 after all.

Which would you kind folk opt for?

thank you all,

Consider the value (to yourself) while you own the firearm, when it has been blued. Worry about later, later. Pride in ownership counts for a lot during your use and when you just handle it.

I have had a couple rifles cerocoated to mimic bluing. For a hunting rifle I think it is more resistant to scratching. Although I take very good care of my hunting rifles, I don't consider them museum pieces. Kind of like me, every scar tells a story!

I have seen a lot of Doug's work over the years. There is no equal.
I don't really know prices or time frames but the idea of having your rifle's metal finished in a combination of bluing and case hardening would be magnificent and heirloom quality.

You can spray paint it at home.. if you like paint on any gun-
I prefer bluing, or polished stainless steel.. that’s my opinion…
Pretty much my thoughts, but stuff like Ceracoat (spray paint) is the proper metal finish for some metals that can't be treated by proper methods, like blueing. Ceracoat is likely a more modern and more durable finish that approximates the finishes that were factory applied to pot metal receivers and such on 22 Rimfires, etc.
