It is said that Bell once proclaimed that his .275 Rigby bore "had never been polluted by a soft point bullet".
So a really good bet that it was FMJ.
 
The fabled "Bell shot" was a rear oblique shot through the neck muscles into the brain, with a round-nose FMJ bullet.

I wonder how many of those 800 pachyderms were uncooperative and didn't stand quietly to offer up that "rear oblique" position?
Perhaps he had his faithful native friend Imoogu acting as an "elephant distractor". ;) jd

I was just thinking that there may have been some very exciting stories involving protective herd bulls and such.. Elephants are notoriously good at detecting a threat, and taking either evasive or aggressive action.
After a lifetime of hunting, trapping, and killing stuff, I know that it aint always pretty. And I'd bet that in the killing of 800 elephants -----
