204 ruger 12 twist

I got a new rifle and im rounding up components for it. It’s a 1:12 twist checked with a brush and rod. Years ago I had a Remington that didn’t have any trouble shooting the factory loaded 40vmax. Now I’m researching like usual and seems like some 12s would not stabilize the 40 grainer. I kinda hope to shoot this rifle at distance from time to time and know the 32s probably won’t cut it lol. I know 39 blitz kings will probably fly as it’s what I used to shoot. Any other recommendations that’s heavier than the 32 vmax that might work ? I want to be a killer but more often than not I play with target papers and shooting distance with rifles that I probably shouldn’t be. I got a bad habit of trying to make all my stuff be the best at every range both long and short. Thanks

What twist was your Remington? I mean actual, not literature quoted. I have a reason for asking that question. I had 2 different Remington 204 Rugers. Both were 12T per their literature. However checking revealed one was a 9.5T and one was a 13T. Changed how I reloaded for them.

I have multiple 20's, several in 12T and I've never had an issue getting acceptable accuracy with any of the available bullets up to 40 gr. The Sierra 39 gr has seemed to produce the best accuracy across the rifles.

That’s one question I can’t answer. I never checked my remington. My cousin owns it now so I guess I could. I did research them right before posting and they claimed to be 1:12 but I have no way of confirming it. I wouldn’t think it could have been a 13 twist Thank you

I never would have dreamed a Remington 12T would measure anything but 12T. But my smith told me some Remington's (204 Rugers) weren't what they were supposed to be. I would have never checked them until he told me that. I now make that part of my records I keep on my firearms.

When I got one of my 204 Rugers re barreled, I went with zero FB. I love it.

For my 204r 12 twist i use 35gr bergers. I shot some 40gr vmax factory loads and they were okay accuracy. I would look at the 35s or 40gr bergers. I have since built a 20p and use 40gr vmax but i put a 10 twist barrel on that one. I have some 40gr bergers to try just have not had time to test them.

Those Varmint Nightmare's shot super well in some of my 20's, but when my commie state went to lead free on critters, I could only legally use them on paper, etc. And they did explode varmints quite well.

I haven't called Calhoon for a long time, but their website lists the 33 & 39 hollow point. When they still sold 17's I shot them and they were accurate. I think the 39 will run in a 1/12 it's a short for weight bullet.

Had 2 Savage 204's 1-12 Twist, they shot everything great up to 45 grains, replaced with 5 -1-11" barrels just to make sure they shot the 40's & 45 grainer's All 26 " barrels.

Don't overlooking the Speer 39 grain TNT'S. In my Savage Model 12 VLP they edged out blitzking's. Not by much. But still they are cheaper. I worked with both of the 39's when I first started loading for that gun and they didn't care for 8208 like the blitzking's do. But a few years away from them I tried again and found they like to be over Benchmark. CAP1888212043354721528.jpg

Sure would be nice if Sierra offered their 36 grain Blitz King to us reloaders as a separate component.
I have the feeling it would split the difference between 32s and 40s very nicely for all the twelve twist rifles out there. Better b.c. than a 32 and a bit more weight to anchor a distant coyote or chuck a bit better. Since your not opposed to trying factory loads maybe try a box of the Prairie Enemy for 204.

I picked up the last box at a LGS yesterday to break in the barrel with. New barrel, chrono says 3721 and 3719. Will test them for groups at 100 yds near the end of box

Does anybody know the length difference between the 36 and 39 BK?
I'm just wondering if there's much to gain if you have a 12t droping to the 36 from 39
if the 36's were even available.
