Wyman Meinzer-days of the past-added today's episode! And another.

When my dad was a kid. He caught a civet cat in a leg hold trap. Civets were worth some money back then. He didnt have a 22 with him so he clubed him. Grandma wouldnt let him in the house when he got back. He smelled so good. I dont think he ever clubbed another skunk. Doug

A good story Bill. I will send it to Wyman. Sylinda and Wyman will be here tomorrow for 2 or 3 days and we are really looking forward to the visit. I should have a recorder to record his stories. We hope to get to the club to shoot a little and if my Great Granddaughter can work it in her busy schedule, they will go coyote calling.
Butch don't let her miss out on the chance of a lifetime, you know it will be a memory she will never forget.

I was just wondering if he had hung all those pelts out to get a good picture of them, and then it started snowing on em. I've done stuff like that. jd

Trapping coons and coyotes last year, I caught an absolutely beautiful skunk with a 4" wide bright white solid stripe down his back.

I did my best to kill him instantly with a brain shot. Shot placement was spot-on and he simply went limp, for about 2 minutes, then he starting oozing / squirting scent all over everything (including me).

That would have been an incredible skin......
When I had a skunk in the trap, always shot them behind the shoulder with a cb long or any standard round nose 22lr. Don’t hit the spine, head, major bones (shoulder, etc) and they don’t spray. They basically fall asleep and are done. I have skinned out every one of them with no issue. Just my experience w/ maybe 8-10 of them.

The house is similar to the old ramshackle cottage we had in upstate New York State. It got so cold in there we would get up and make a fire in the old potbelly stove. Then we had a stove out of the 1940's with 2 burners and one didn't work. We toasted bread in a hot frying pan. We froze our butts off at night but I loved every single minute in the old place. The floor beams were twisted old logs and newspaper in the walls dating back to 1870's, My brother built a house and tore it down without my mom getting to say goodbye to where she lived there as a kid. She was mad and so was I.I will never forget that old cottage which originally was an ice fishing shack they towed out onto Honeoye lake with horse's. Time fly's but memories last. Happy New Year and let's hope it is a good one.

Great memories.. Everybody has good stories of their past -- if we can just remember them!

Butch, I've had really good luck killing skunks around the house with a shotgun and birdshot..
I ease up to within 10 yards or so and bowl 'em over.. Haven't had a leaker yet.. But then all I do is scoop them up with a shovel and walk them down to the creek for deposit..

Happy New Year!

Pat, Have you seen my emails or do you have a new email address.
Wyman is on the way to our house. Should be here right after lunch.
A very happy New Years to you and Vicki!

Oh, My FIL used to have a trap for them and it was attached to their clothes line,. He would grab his 410 and lead them out to the pasture and disposed them. That kinda agrees with what you suggested.

That is what I always do and get the same results
