Goofy Gun Slang and Expressions

When people refer to bullet rotational speeds or spindle speeds using RPMS or RPM's I cringe.
RPM is already plural, it refers to Revolutions Per Minute. No "s" suffix needed!
Good to know. Absolutely not going to say "but you know what I mean". The burden remains on me to eliminate this mistake. Thanks!

Simply the positively most over used worthless word..."tactical"

(Tactical underwear, socks, pants, telescopes, gloves..... you ain't in the army but think you are stuff.)
Tactical Rosaries, Bibles and Holy Water :) :P

Some guys on gun boards are always talking about their "reticules", yep, their small purses.

Danny
Bob Bell covered the evolution of the word "reticle" from "reticule" in an old Gun Digest article.
It was originally a "reticule", but not the "small purse" definition.
It comes from the definition that refers to a lattice or net like pattern(like a "reticulated python").
Considering how complicated some reticles have become, maybe we should go back to "reticule".

I grew up in a neighborhood where you could hear Yiddish, jive (1st Airplane movie), and the King's English in the same day. When I traveled for my work, I appreciated the local colloquialism and accents.
With gun folk, it's much the same. I am guilty of uttering many of these pet peeve terms over forty years of gun ownership.
The only one which bothers me, because I know it to be hyperbole, is when a reloader, writing about their RCBS, Hornady, Lyman, etc auto powder feeder, says "it throws to the kernel."
Alas, computers, the Internet and cellular phones have lead to a degradation of our language.
How many of you used to have 50-100 or more phone numbers memorized, and how many can you recall now? I might remember ten.

When I was a kid each summer we'd go to Bluefield West Virginia and stay with my cousins for a week or two. One of my cousin's friends asked me where I was from. I said Ohio. He said, yeah you can tell by the accent.

Ten year old me was incredulous. "I don't have an accent! YOU do!"

I was at the pistol range yesterday and there was this other shooter there. We were talking and then he asked me what kind of pills I was using. I then told him about my blood pressure medication. He didn't know what to say so I told him the Dr prescribes pills and you shoot bullets. He just looked at me with a dumb look on his face.

Thank you. Exactly the correct answer if you were ok with disclosing your medical info. I would say that it's probably sufficient to just answer his question, though.

Becoming very overused and dull: "magical" and he works "magic " on guns.
Well, while I don’t disagree that the term “Magic” is used where not entirely accurate, I can say it is justly appropriate for the Stock work by our very own “Bc’z”!
I encourage you to check the “search” element here to view some of his “Wizardly” execution of the highest order!

His work can best be described as that of a very talented and highly skilled craftsman, but it's still not magic.

The stock work: what you say is fact.

Unfortunately, I had someone on this forum call me a "Democrat" because I had a varying opinion to his on an issue.

However, at my age, I am immune to name calling. But for the record, I am not a Democrat or for that matter a Republican. I am an Independent but more importantly I am a Christian. ;) So if you want to call me names, at least get it right. :):):)

My range favorite is, "Yea, I shot a deer at 400 yards with old Betsy". I just smile and nod, but I want to ask, "was it exactly 400 yards on your range finder and how much hold over did you use with old Betsy which has a 3 x 9 scope on it". But being a polite fellow, I just let it pass. It always nice to make a fellow shooter feel good even though you strongly suspect he is spreading bull stools. :)
Kinda like fish stories eh?
