Goofy Gun Slang and Expressions

About 40 years ago, I used to say "recticle" when talking about scopes because the first time I heard it that's the way it was pronounced. Then some years later when I saw the word in print I realized I'd been saying wrong all along.

I may have written about this on these forums once before but, several years ago I took a class (just because one of the instructors was a friend of my son) and one of the instructors went on at length about the importance of proper terminology, specifically what is a “magazine” and what is a “clip.” He holds up a magazine and says “This IS NOT a clip! See it enclosed the rounds inside itself. A clip is like what they had in World War Two on the M1 Garand. The rounds were held in a clip called a stripper clip. They’d put the clip in the top, strip the rounds out with their thumb and then the clip would fly out the top.”

Oh Kay….

Another comes from out West, "a cap and ball outfit..." referencing a low budget, johnny come lately ranching outfit. They were not able to afford cartridge firearms.

And he was a instructor???

Here's one. It just popped up in the classifieds. I see it often and it just won't go away. What is "VARMIT"???????

I have been watching several videos of long range builds, mostly by popular You Tube Gurus who all kinda look alike. Fortyish in years, bearded, T-Shirts that show off the biceps and hide the gut, and carrying on conversations born from the Video Game Crowd. They talk like Sophomores in High School.

A term has popped up in many of these Videos that gives me pause. In stead of using the term Millimeter in the name of a cartridge, they say MM. “Today we are shooting the 7MM REM Magnum“, instead of “Today we are shooting the Seven Millimeter Remington Magnum”.

Maybe I am too old to understand, but to me it just sounds stupid. Perhaps they don’t know that MM is an abbreviation for Milimeter.

But then, that generation in all likelihood probably thinks the terms I use are at best antiquated..

To me it shows ignorance when someone calls bullets pills, heads or spells it boolits. Guns are not toys and you shoot not pop caps. When I teach someone to reload which I have about 45 years of experience the first thing I teach is proper nomenclature. They then say what is that and when are we going to make bullets to which I say we are going to reload cartridges.

Some guys on gun boards are always talking about their "reticules", yep, their small purses.
