Favorite 22lr hunting ammo

With very few subsonic hollow point options, what’s your favorite hunting round in 22lr? I mainly shoot eley sub hollow points since RWS has been pretty rough to find.

I just checked my stash last night and it looks like I have sub sonic hollow points from CCI, Remington, and RWS.

I’ve had surprisingly good luck over the years from the Remington SS HPs. They are plenty accurate for 50 yard head shots out of my CZ 455.

Ely Scorpion 22LR HV HP. I don't think they've made it in years, and I'm down to my last 9 boxes. Most accurate HV ammo I ever used. It consistently grouped around 3/8" at 50yds. Absolutely deadly on groundhogs (head shots) at and slightly beyond 100yds.

I’m like a lot of those responding to this thread, I shot what the rifle or pistol likes as far as ammo. 22s seem to have a strong preference from gun to gun. Growing up our local gun store was our only choice as far as ammo went, that and Yellow Front is any of you remember that chain. We always had our 22s on the ranch, cant tell you how many rabbits, squirrels, skunks, crow etc etc went to heaven due to Winchester super x.

The new SuperX doesn’t seem as good. When I’m finding hunting ammo for a 22 I have a good stash of CCI velocitors and mini mags, stingers too. I still have a few cases of super X, some Aguila and federal game shok HPs. Out of the ammo I have here the Game Shok seems to be the ammo most tend to favor. I don’t have any of the Gucci 22 ammo, just basic stuff that works well for hunting.

That die mentioned is intriguing, never knew anyone made something like that.

For squirrels I am fairly happy with CCI SV. I never had one bounce off a squirrel’s head, graze yes but that was my fault. Funny when they fall from the tree but aren’t there when you go to retreive them. I got that one an hour later and saw the hair cut I gave him.

My Ruger 77/22 likes Remington Golden Bullet Hollow Points. Not the milk carton crap with loose bullets, the paper boxed in a brick type. When I run out of that brick I’ll shoot the CCI SV or the Winchester SuperX HPs i bought ten years ago.

Chris , I like Winchester power points that come with that nice box , in the late 1980's these shot fantastic, was being used in matches, they were that good, and no misfires. I bought a lot from Wideners @ $125.00 per case. These are great varmint rounds
That's how long it has been.
I will get a lot of "flack" with this opinion but I use solids for squirrels.
I aim for the head or wait ,for better shot. The hollow points work great
but tear up too much , and those tree rats are tuff Olympians. That's just my thinking on this. I bought a case of newer production sometime later, not too good. There was misfires like 3 or 4 per fifty and the accuracy isnt there anymore. I don't kno how to transfer a pic from my phone to computer to show pics of this ammo, and how it looks. I was certainly appreciated , Winchester accuracy at the time. I guess the machines need a change out , they are pushing pie plate accuracy now , instead of what it was. Thanks Chris , Buck in n.c.

No flack from me on the solids. We shot a lot of then last year with CCI green tags due to how accurate they are out of the 10/22s we shoot. We do quite a few tournament hunts and I do prefer the hollow points just in case there is a less than ideal shot taken. It makes a mess but helps to end things pretty quick. Makes cleaning them a chore though hah. Thanks Buck!

My dads old 10/22 shoots the Winchester stuff like a house fire. It is really the only thing it likes to shoot. Might need to send it to Randy at CPC to see if he can change that.

One of the Basic Rules of Business.
If you make a really good product, be sure to discontinue it once demand gets high enough.
Dear Johnnyofalltrades , my sentiments exactly . This is like the cz 527 fantastic rifles, the trigger is two stage . they stopped it. I have other 527's I want but that more month than money gets old. Then helene come to visit, I live in Henderson county, we got hurt
Buncombe county got destroyed.
They are still looking for remains .
We have roads that are be repaired in later part of 2025. I am not faulting
D.O.T. they have their hands full.
Johnny, Google chimney rock park this will take years to recuperate.
Sorry Johnny go on a ramble. The other one was when Winchester went from 64's to post 64's . Then another one Remington 788's . I heard was competing with the 700's , and stopped production. I want the sako 78's Winchester 52's, I hope the Remington custom shop comes back , and leupold custom shop.
Johnny , I have a lot of wants and wishes , I hope to get part of them , and very ,very happy and thankful to have a home after helene.
Johnny , hope to meet you someday.

I’m hoping to get a hollowpointing die because my 10/22 I put together with kid parts shoots the CCI SV as well as it shoots lapua center-x minus the occasional CCI flier. I want to hollow point some of it and see if it stays as accurate.

Johnny , if you want to send me your cell number, one a p.m. I will send pics of these Winchester power points. I will send mine on a p.m.

Dear Long _Shot , go to gunsinternational and type in Eley ammo . There is a dealer on there that must have an unbelievable amount for sale , the eley scorpion for sale . I have been toying with the idea of getting me case .

If you are shooting squirrels, why not use whatever standard velocity or economical standard velocity ammunition that works well and has nice accuracy. I don't know if subsonic hollow points will expand well (maybe why you aren't finding many), and you probably don't need high velocity hollow points for squirrels.

The only subsonic HP I have found shoot real good is eley subs. The can be hard to find a lot of times in the area. Overall there aren’t many ammo manufacturers that make subsonic HP.
