Favorite 22lr hunting ammo

Back in the day when I shot Hunter's Small Bore Pistol Silhouette and hunted small game with a 22 rimfire, the Winchester Super X was my go-to round. But that was a long time ago. I haven't seen it on the shelves around here in over 20 years.

For squirrel hunting.

CCI mini mags were always the best accuracy out of my Savage 24 and Ruger 10/22. I used the round nose versions. The HP kerploded the squacks more than I liked. No run offs with the RN. All shots aimed at the head and resulted in head shots, neck shots or full misses. Worked out very well.

CCI quiets and sub sonics worked well too. They just had less range before accuracy diminished. Where I hunted the noise was never a factor.

Also used aguila off and on when I couldn't find CCI in stock. Those worked very well too.

For varmints, not for meat I used the Aguila version of the CCI stinger/yellow jackets. For anything big, I'd use the 20 ga lower barrel on my sav 24. Or switch to my sav 24 223/20ga

I just use (as mentioned above) whatever shoots best in a particular gun. Which 99% of the time is Eley BB Match in the Remington 541 X.

CCI Stingers in my 1980 Rem. 572. The rifle shot them very well. This combo killed a lot of PA groundhogs back then. Remington Copperheads were a close second.

One of my favorite things to do anymore is squirrel hunt. My favorite ammo was Fiocchi SubSonic HP's which are no longer made. I have tried lots of ammo and decided to get a Niel Waltz HP die but that was almost impossible. I borrowed a friends and didn't like the tolerances so built my own. I have tried a number of different ammos as I want something that is easily found and consistent in production quality.

I have had great luck with a number of ammos but have settled on CCI Blazer. In my testing I have shot a number of sub 1" 5shot groups at 100yds with it, drops the squirrels very quickly. It doesn't always make ammo more accurate but never have I had it hurt accuracy. No more trying to find wat ammo works best in each gun as it shoots great in every rimfire I have tried.

I have also used it on HP ammo such as CCI Mini Mags. It trues up the bullet and improves the hollow point. If you look at the factory ammo sometimes the hp is full of wax and off center. When pushing in the new point of the die stem it also makes the bands of the bullet a consistent size. Winchester is the one brand there is no salvaging. They make garbage rimfire ammo, not what they use to be.

Now that is cool!
I used to get excellent accuracy from Winchester Power Point ammo, but can't seem to find it anymore.
My gun loves SK Standard Plus, but critters don't much mind when you shoot them with a round nose. Very poor results.
I need to build me one of those dies!

What would be the cost to have you send one of those dies my way? Lol. Thank is really nice. I have a lot of lead round nose that shoot extremely well in my kidd 10/22, but if shots miss their mark on the head, it takes another follow up.

Thanks to everyone for the replies!

We shot Ram targets at 100 yards with 22 rimfire pistols with Super X and it was the preferred ammo of all the top shooters in my area back in the late 70's and mid 80's.

I cleaned a bank of 10 Rams at 100 yards with a Model 17, S&W during one match. :) Also cleaned the chickens (25 yards) and pigs (50 yards) in different matches but never the Turkey's at 75 yards.

FWIW,
Years ago I took several .22s to the range and as many different ammos as I had and shot them all to see what worked in what.
The Winchester 555 and 333 bulk ammo shot best in everything except
my Contender .22 14” Match barrel which preferred Blazer.
CCI and others weren’t close.
I stockpiled those older kind of Winchesters, but don’t know
how they compare to the newer.
