Which cartridge, within limits?

This is one for the competitors with experience of different cartridges. If you had range limits of 3200fps and ME of 3300ft/lbs what cartridge would you shoot to be most competitive? As an example a 180gr at 2850fps falls just under the limit.

I intend to shoot 6GT to 600m but was wondering what if would go for for longer range whilst still maintaining the precision. I've tried to factor in wind drift and recoil. Is it better to make best use of the energy limits or go for something lighter recoiling? This is likely to be a bipod mounted, range rifle so probably in the 15lb kind of weight.

A higher energy cartridge loaded down won't cut it as they would likely not be allowed.

284 WIn and it's variations is very popular.

I don’t compete but I keep reading about guys winning 1000 yard trophies with the 6br and Dashers. I have both and like the mild recoil.

Yes they can until the wind picks up. I did wonder about the 7-6.5 PRCW. I'd imagine in a 26" barrel you'd be under the energy limit?

What are the Vel and Energy limits for ?
They are generally restrictions imposed on military ranges for civilian shooters as the range templates are designed for those limits. Don't bother asking about common sense, when it's Government or their various agencies making the rules you either comply or find non military ranges to shoot on or find another sport.

To answer the OP, 284 is the easy option. You would probably be just be under the HME threshold.

The ranges over here have range safety certificates. They specify the safe limits for ammunition used, factoring in ricochet risk and how far they can carry if they go over the backstop. I imagine that's less of an issue in a country as large as the US. You can get rangers certified for High Muzzle Energy but that's just more bureaucracy to deal with and fewer ranges to choose from.

You're right, although 284 can go over if loaded hotter and with longer barrels. I did wonder about 6.5-284 with the ~150gr bullets, which might be easier?

284 is a lot easier. I have a 6.5 and with 144 Berger it's competitive but generally stays in the safe and the 7 Shehane comes out for the longer ranges. I also have 6x47 but even in club matches now I would be toast at anything beyond 600 yards. That's shooting FO by the way.
