22 Ammo issue???

Hello everyone,
So I ran into something I’ve never had happen before and wonder if any of you guys had something like this or similar happen. If so what did you do?

1st my gun is the CZ 457 Varmint @ One rifle with Vortex Strike Eagle 5-25x56 scope. When I want to shoot as accurately as I possibly can I use the SK Rifle Match (red & black box) ammo. I’ve tested probably over 14-15 different over the counter loads and have found that the Aguila 40gn 1255fps works quite well for a close second surprisingly. Anyway so I decided to buy a case of this as my practice rounds.
I got it and went out to shoot with it and noticed immediately the rounds were very touch to chamber through the magazine. Now it’s cold here in Michigan but I‘ve never had this happen in the past. In fact prior to buying the case, I had run 200-300rds through my gun to make sure they worked well before buying 2000rds.
Upon looking closer at these in the case I found that the lubricant/wax or whatever is used is very gummy or hard on the bullet. (My guess is this is an older run of ammo that has sat on the shelf for a while and the lub got hardend up?) In fact in some cases it measures .230” but most are in the .227-.228” range so clearly this is whats causing my issue. You can’t even manually put one in the chamber without it really sticking and it takes quite a bit to “force” it to chamber.

So if you’ve had something like this what did you guys do? Don’t know that I can return ammo so I’m guessing I’d need to clean all this off with maybe some denatured alcohol or cleaning solvent.

Any tips or suggestions would be apprecited. For your reference I’ve attached a few pix for you to see.

1st…decent ammo with good lube does not work well below 40 deg.
2nd… I’d guess you’re dealing with a lead/carbon ring in the throat.
Do a search to learn how to deal with the throat (C4)and if you don’t know, learn how to properly clean your barrel.
FWIW, as far as “ as accurately as possible” supersonic ammo, especially copper washed is not what you want.

You may not see it wih the naked eye but it’s likely there. the plated stuff with a harder surface…you may feel it more then lead which will simply swage down easier.
Get the throat clean, see if that helps.

On my "Match Chambered" Green Mountain Barrel ( that WAS grabbing Bullets & Failing to Eject LIVE Ammo ),
I Slathered a little bit of, JB's over, a Patch On, a Bronze Brush,. 8 to 10 Strokes, ONE Way to Lightly Polish the Sharp Rifling at, Bullet Nose and the Throat "Area" that WAS, causing the Sticking of, Ammo in My Rifle,..
Now, Works, GREAT !!!
No change in Accuracy as JB's "changes" VERY Little, Except some Smoothing of,..the Sharp Rifling, edges.
PS; I'd try wiping, SOME of, the Excess Wax,.. OFF, the Bullets with, a soft Rag,. dampened with, Ammonia or, Alcohol

If the bullet diameter is measuring .230 that sounds large and it appears in the middle picture a loaded round is stopping well before it ever gets to the lead/throat so I don't think it's an issue with carbon or lead build up in the throat area.

Have you tried cleaning any of the rounds that won't chamber to see if they'll chamber after they've been cleaned? I think I'd probably start with that to see if that cures your issue. I'd be interested to know what they measure after you clean them because .230 sounds like a lot to me.

Thanks I’m going to see about cleaning the goo off the bullet. I’ve cleaned my barrel multiple times and it doesn’t make any difference. I can easily remove the goo off with my finger nail and it wipe it off and it will then go in the chamber. In fact after wiping down 5 shells and loading them in my magazine it will chamber all 5 without any issues so I’m back to my original though that the problem is the coating being hard and to thick on the bullets.

Thanks for the idea of ammonia! I was going to use some denatured alcohol. I just didn’t want to have to clean 2000rds but I guess I may not have a choice now.

and yes exactly! This is why I was saying that I didn’t think it was a “copper build up” issue but evidently others didn’t follow what I was saying.

Yes I just answered the comment before you but yes they chamber without issue once I wipe off the “lub/wax” or whatever is used. The amount of lub/wax is what I believe is causing the issue. I’ve never had this before thats why I thought I’d ask the community.

Just really didn’t want to have to clean all these rounds.

You need some lube on the lead to prevent leading of the barrel, but not necessary on the brass. It sounds like you have excessive lube, but don't remove it all - a wipe with a rag (no solvent) should do the job; you can probably do them in bulk by rolling them in a towel.

Only my Ruger MK1 pistol will chamber and fire it.
Bullet diameter is right at maximum. .226" diameter.
Stuck with 5000 rounds, as it was not returnable . Was told to contact Aguila. I didnt.

I tried their other types of 22lr before, no issues with them.

So they chambered fine single feeding but don't want to chamber off the magazine. Have you had the same issue with other ammo(SK match) from the magazine or are you always single feeding match ammo?

Same with my ammo, in my S&W revolver & Mossberg 144 & Rem 581.

Did not try in my High Standard Trophy , standard velocity only.

The Ruger MK 1 has to be well worn. Many rounds fired. Large chamber.

I had a batch of CCI target with excessive lube that gummed up the chamber.

I wiped the remaining unfired round with a Scott Shop Rag, and all was fine afterwards.

It is possible that the fired Aguila round does not have sufficient power to push the bolt back far enough to completely compress the recoil spring thereby reducing the force available to pick up a new round from the magazine and then chamber it.

1. Put an SK round in the chamber and close the bolt, load the magazine and insert it, fire the rifle and see if it chambers the Aguila round.
2. Thoroughly clean the bolt face as well as any and all areas of the bolt that has direct contact the receiver.

22rf ammo is dirty particularly noticeably in semi-automatic rifles & pistols.

That being said, cold temperatures & excess lube should be thoroughly checked.

Most cheap 22lr ammo bullets are pure lead. The "goo" coating keeps bullets from leading the barrel.

Some match grade bullets will have 2% antimony in the alloy.

Yes thats odd, I’ve tryed these several boxes before buying the full case and never had this issue. This only happened with the case I bought.
