Muzzle Brake cleaning solution for ultrasonic cleaner

6.5 forever

Silver $$ Contributor
I am using a ultrasonic cleaner to clean my brakes, generally every 500 rounds. I have been using CLR. Shooters choice has a solution that costs a little more than CLR, but instructions show mixing 1 part with 2 parts water. This would be a cost savings.

Any experience with solutions for muzzle Brake cleaning?

My brakes are stainless, no worries about the finish.

Using CLR will most certainly work but will remove the coating as well as carbon. I use CLR to clean carbon build up on my suppressors but use BoreTech Eliminator to clean my brakes. I don't even toss them in the sonic cleaner I just soak them in an old plastic dish and have kept re-using the solution until it's too muddy.

Thanks for the info. I updated my post noting my brakes are stainless, no worries about ruining the finish. I use Boretech for cleaning barrels but that stuff is pretty expensive to soak muzzle brakes in?

Same solution as wet tumbling in the ultrasonic....Dawn, creme of tarter, & lemishine....brakes and suppressor internals come out bright, shiny, spotless.

Carbon and gunk start pouring off the parts with the flip of the switch.

RCBS at one time made a US concentrate solution for gun parts, and I used this with some water in a small glass jar that I set in the US cleaner, works good, but have to run several times.

I looked it up. Falls out of wine during the fermentation process. Here are some uses:

Some uses for cream of tartar

Appliance polish. Mix one part cream of tartar with four parts white vinegar to create a paste that will help you polish stainless steel, aluminum, and silver appliances.

Rust remover. Mix with hydrogen peroxide and baking soda and let sit on rusty areas for an hour. Wipe clean.

Stain remover. Applying cream of tartar on a damp stain may help you remove difficult stains before washing your clothes.

I wasn’t doubting its feasibility only that I’ve never heard of using it. Also I wasn’t sure if we were still talking about cleaning brakes or making a shrimp salad…

”creme of tarter” ??
Yup...creme of tarter....tartaric acid.

Dawn, lemishine and creme of tarter is the recipe of the originator of wet tumbling or Sonic cleaning....I've forgotten which came first.

I've used that recipe for years, both wet tumbling and ultra sonic cleaning.

About a tsp of each.
