1k F-class / BR: 30 cal custom bullets

I've used the VT 204's in a 300 WSM and they shoot well although the BC is probably closer to a 185 Jug.

That's the rub, right there, isn't it?

Do the Vapor Trails (or Hottenstein, or Bison, etc.) shoot enough better than Berger 20Xs or 208s in terms of group size to over-ride the relative lack of BC, or would a person be better off dropping back to something like a 185 Juggernaut that tunes in pretty dang easy in it's own right?

Some of that probably depends on what game you're playing - something that is score-only, like F-class, or group-first-score-second like LR BR.

As Fclass shooters we get "paid" on the aggregate. If conditions are mild I'd say it doesn't matter as much. If it gets windy and switchy all bets are off. Having to holding that extra ring or ring and a half becomes a detriment at some point.

Just because a bullet has a higher BC than another has no bearing on if it's gonna shoot smaller, the only way is to test them.

Seriously? Pretty sure I never said anything implying that 'higher BC' equated to 'more accurate'.

First sentence of 2 part question is directly aimed at the accuracy of the customs with lower BC's than the factory offerings they are being compared to.
So no you didn't outright ask if they were more accurate, your curious mind eluded to it. Lol

So I'll stand by my statement of just because a bullet has a higher BC than another, doesn't mean it will shoot smaller.
Only you and your rifle can sort that out with testing.

Maybe in perfect conditions. In 1K FClass, which was the question, that's not necessarily the case. My 6mm dasher is more accurate than my 300 WSM but it won't shoot smaller in any kind of conditions for 3 X 20 shots. That's an extreme case of BC difference but still applies. The bigger the wind and specifically wind changes the more BC matters.

The original post was labeled Fclass/BR. Only reason I commented was the BR caveat. Totally agree with the BC and Fclass.

If I could just talk a custom bullet maker into making 90gr VLD type bullets! So far I’ve been denied.

I would be hesitant to overlook abullet based on a lower advertised bc. Sometimes a bullet just handles conditions better. Sometimes a higher bc bullet doesnt. Most of us would be better off if there was no bc on the box to get in our heads. Same goes for pointing. Doesnt always make them shoot less windage or shoot more accurately. How the bullet flies and handles wind is not just about bc.

I always think of the 185 Juggernaut in cases like this - that bullet works better than any numbers suggest. Are there any bigger 30s that stand out in your mind as surprisingly performant in a lot of rifles?
