Lapua 6GT brass

I appreciate Lapua brass as much as anyone, but it would be nice if they branched into cartridges not already made by Alpha. Not from a non-compete sense... just to fill more holes in the market. But, volume counts and apparently they think there’s enough 6GT market share there to make it worth it.

Lapua did just this with its 6.5X47 Lapua and 6.5 Grendel brass, not to mention being years ahead of every other manufacturer with the small primer .308 Win 'Palma' case, developed in partnership with the US Palma teams. It was no surprise that when the Ukraine war put European ammunition suppliers under pressure, this trio were among the lines suspended.

Unlike say Alpha, Lapua is a mainstream ammunition and ammunition components producer. Converting a production line to relatively low-volume speciality designs is very disruptive to producing its mainstream products. It seems that in times of normal demand, Lapua will live with this but understandably looks to make it worthwhile with premium pricing, likewise choosing designs that have a high probability of commercial success and long-term sales. Unlike many large US producers, the company is very good at continuing to support users even if and when sales volumes fall off. I couldn't imagine Remington say continuing to make 6.5X47L brass through thick and thin - it ditched 300 SAUM production as soon as it became obvious it wasn't a commercial challenger to the WSM.

The 6GT is basically a ballistic twin to a 6x47 Lapua. Dimensions are slightly different and one has a 35° shoulder VS the 47 case being a 30° but neck length and case capacity is nearly identical. Loaded to, equal, pressure I don't really see one shooting any faster than the other so I have to ask, with them being nearly twins what is the purpose of tooling up or stopping production to switch over to a different case when Lapua can't keep up with their regular stuff??

Don't get me wrong I am all for new stuff but when you're already way behind in the production of your current line up and you're even putting the production of some stuff on hold or discontinuing it why would you add something brand new to your line up. I'm sure Lapua has a master plan and they're a successful company so far be it from me to question them but I'm struggling to see the logic behind this when they already have a very successful case they're making in the 6.5x47Lapua that is so easily necked down to 6mm if someone chooses to or if the 6mm market is so hot why not just make 6x47Lapua cases. I'd think tooling up to run 6x47 cases would be a hell of a lot easier and more cost affective then a whole different case.

Again, I'm certainly not down on either and I'm a huge 6mm fan but I am curious why Lapua has chosen this path, especially, in these times when their production can't keep up with the current demand.

I’d love to see Lapua 6x47 brass. I’m using the Peterson right now.

But, having shot both, the GT is a cut above, even with the less than perfect alpha brass.

6gt lapua brass is unobtanium in Europe. I asked lapua directly about time perspective for 6gt brass hitting the shelves in Europe but could not get any answer.

I assume the pricing will be insane.

I've often thought of building myself a 6GT, but with several 6 Dashers, a 6x47, and a couple of very accurate 6XCs - I have to ask myself why build another rifle and have to invest in dies & brass, especially with the 6x47 being so close to the GT? If I didn't have the Dashers & the 6x47, I'd probably jump on the GT bandwagon.
