Neck turning “ridge”

When I turn brass for my 22 GT , it’s a .250 tight neck, I cut a couple thousandths into the shoulder to help with minimizing or eliminating “donuts”. ( I use 6 GT brass necked down as I have a number of cases)

The question, does anyone have a step/simple solution on removing the slight edge in the shoulder? You can feel it with a fingernail. I don’t have a tapered cutter and thus it s just the way it is. Been thinking about a small rod wrapped with Emory cloth and just doing a light spin against the neck/shoulder ….? What thoughts/advice are out there?

are you using a bushing or a fl sizing die

I also cut at or near full blade width into shoulder. I grind cutter at 1° more than shoulder to help blend edge.

Even so a slight edge forms on some pieces. Not to worry...they iron out.

F/L die. Have used friends bushing die and still have same ridge…. If I shorten depth of cut then I worry about donut formation. Running 88 gr Eldm and full diameter base of bullet is just at junction of shoulder/neck.

Get it throated to fit your bullet. Simple.

We did throat it for that bullet… wanted max bullet pull and ability to “chase the lands” …. Could we have added an extra .010 or .015 to reamer; sure but not way we went. Donuts are possibly not going to happen but trying to be conservative.

I could also shoot a shorter bullet, like Eldm 80, Berger, etc but want to keep .546 G1 BC of 88 …. Decisions, decisions !!

Like everyone else trying to always build a better mousetrap, haha

I agree with @JEFFPPC. The best fix is to use a throater so the straight portion of the bullet shank seats away from the neck shoulder junction.

Besides, the all dreaded Donut is a result of sizing the case, not neck turning. If you size a case enough times, a donut will form despite your best efforts.

That is why you make it a non issue by having the proper throat for your bullet of choice.
