Inexpensive 223 powder

BL-c2. I’ve been buying it for $40/ pound. It meters wonderfully. I just finished a reloading session, showing a friend how to reload 223 plinking rounds. We set the thrower at 26.1 grains and threw 325 charges. Every one we checked on the scale was dead nuts on.
what thrower?

My WC846 (BLC2 military equivalent) load with Hornady 62 FMJ BT is 26.0gr and is stupid accurate in my AR's. I bulk load it on my 5.56 dedicated 1050...

There are some good pull down powders out there with a little
research for WC-846. Just watch out for the scam sites.
Alright, I have got to ask, what is a pull down powder? I did go to the American reloading site and I did see a powder called MP 418 = equivalent to H335. Is it as consistent as the 335 or are you rolling the dice?

Pull down powder is military cartridges (disassembled) or military surplus powders resold

What is "inexpensive".... The term means different things to different people.
My definition is availability. Can I find it locally and not have to pay hazmat!

I use to buy by the lb and as needed. Now I buy in quantities to spread that cost as many of the powders I use are not available locally..

what thrower?
Just my old trusty RCBS thrower. Doesn’t even have the fancy micrometer adjuster on it.
My friend was stuck in “I have to weigh every charge” hell. Even pistol! I showed him that you CAN just throw “accurate enough” charges for plinking rounds if you follow some simple guidelines:
1. Use a ball powder or , for pistol, a flattened ball powder.
2. Pick a load out of the middle of the book charge spread. That way, if your charge is off by a tenth of a grain either way, you’re still in the safe zone.
3. Use the same throw technique (force) for every throw.
He was nervous about it and HAD to keep checking. He probably weighed 100 random throws out of the 325 and each one was on the money. Maybe 2 or three were a tad light by half a tenth.
I showed him what a hard double tap at the bottom of the stroke would do. Settle the powder in the thrower and yield a charge a grain or two heavier than the target charge but still under MAX Load data. Best not to do that.
I explained that he should test the “middle” charge in his gun before doing a big run to make sure the gun functioned properly and he got satisfactory accuracy.
The load we used for the 223 is my tried and true plinking load that works in all my ARs.

I usually look at Powder Valley to see what they are charging - as usually a fair priced place to buy powder. Right now, they only have these, being under $42.00/lb (for single bottles)
CFE223 $38.24
H335 $37.39
TAC $37.39
W748 $41.39

These are all good powders. For the type of shooting I do with 50-grain and under bullets, I'd opt for TAC or W748, as gave better accuracy in my rifles. Heavier bullets, I'd go for CFE223

Looking through the various prices, I was SHOCKED to see how much my favorite powders are now (like the Reloader powders and Accurate LT32). Dang!!!

Just before COVID, I was working up a super cheap .223 load and Alliant Varmint powder was cheap at the time. Something like $20.00/lb.. Sadly, I don't even see that for sale now.

My most accurate load for the 77 grain SMK bullet is 24.2 grains of BL(C)-2. I'm on my third 8 pound jug.
