Honda water pump and generator engines

I have replaced several Honda engines off of tillers wood splitters water pumps and generators - 5 hp to 8 hp. I replaced for a multitude of reasons but used predator engines from harbor freight. As long as you match shaft size you should be gtg. Never had a hf engine to not start or let me down yet ! If you sign up for coupons they are really cheap ! OR you can buy the pump complete for a lot less than a Honda engine - that is if you can find one. https://www.harborfreight.com/2-in-212cc-gasoline-engine-semi-trash-water-pump-158-gpm-63405.html. The 1” is even cheaper especially with coupon

Could be a stuck valve or bent rod also I suppose
Bent rod would be a really impressive bang and instant stop.
Pull the plug, turn it over if it does. Hear or feel it pushing air. Oh yeah, disconnect spark plug.

The pumps come across the ocean by the thousands. A replacement motor takes up just about the same room as an entire pump. Why would they go to the trouble to ship bare motors just to replace a few compared to the thousands of complete pumps? I see where you can get engine parts so if you are dead set on resurrecting the motor, why don't you just overhaul it?

Engine noise, low power and sounds and feels different when I pull it over. I have not checked the compression. Could be a stuck valve or bent rod also I suppose
My generator quit. Plug was fouled, put in a new one, ran rich, ran bad, thought probably carb. Turns out there are 2 spark arrester screens. Outer is coarse, which I had cleaned, along with the air filter. Finally found out about the fine inner one.....it is no longer with us. Runs great.

Yeah, them screens can cause headaches, and normally forgotten
and never checked. Son worked on a Gator that was fouling badly
and no power. After all the normal diagnostics and 4 beers later, I
told him to check that. Sure enough, it was plugged, and plugged
with crap from the muffler that was coming apart......I keep my chain
saws in good order since they are used throughout the year. First
thing I do, is pull the screens. Some will just throw them away. I'll
keep em' in place just for the fact, I'll be cutting in a dry area with
piles of dead leaf's.

There's probably an adapter plate to mount the motor to the engine and you should be able to swap it from one motor to the other, thats probably the only difference. IDK how handy you are or iff you have machine tools, but could you adapt another motor from a different manufacturer?
No, the crankshaft goes directly into the pump, all other GX25 engines have a clutch on the end of the crankshaft.

Post some pictures of how that pump hooks up to the engine. I’m sure a guy could get a harbor freight Chonda on there. They start easy and run great, that said make sure you run them within their warranty period. They will either blow up in the first hour or run a long time. Don’t worry about the size of the engine, you don’t have to run it hard if you’re worried about the pump.

HF does not make a 25cc engine that will match from my research.

Actually it is OHV. Without tearing it down I wont know for sure. When I pull it over it feels rough and very low compression.
Ok. Pull the valve cover off and pull it through. You have to see what is happening.
Push rod jump off the rocker? Broken rocker? Taking a look at the valve requires going deeper. I’d pull the rocker off and grab the valve stem and see if turns. See if it’s bent. This is at least easy and fast.
It is so hard to troubleshoot if I’m not actually there. “Very low compression “ is different than NO compression.
“ Rough to pull through”. Well that alone opens a number of potential serious $$ problems.
I wish I could be of more assistance

Never borrow something, When I was young I had a similar scenario, Wound up replacing the item I borrowed. I also quit letting people borrow since they get amnesia and can't remember who it belongs to or they break it and don't say anything at all, When you go to use it, It don't work.

My neighbor completely trashed my car hauler, Smashed both fenders, Had to cut part of one off to get it home. Never fixed it.
