Let's talk about twist on 6br

I understand the twist but that being said I shoot a 1-12 mostly 80s my friend shoots 1-8 with 103s. Here latley we have been having our on competition with our friends. We all have been shooting rem 700 and savage target actions with benchrest stocks and rest.... back bags and all the gear. Everyone seems to have a mixed bag of different barrels chambered in 6br. For these shoots we basically where all shooting 68 and 69 gr bullets of different makers. I haven't noticed a difference between mine and my friends twist against everyone elses 13.5 and 14 twist So I am starting to wonder why this is. Now I understand they can't shoot heavies for the lack of stabilization. However my 12 and his8 seem to shoot the 68 and 69 just as good as theres. We shooting .2s or so. EDIT WE ARE SHOOTING MOSTLY AT 100YARDS

At what ranges? I've tried pushing 68's out to 600 and they do NOT do anywhere near as good as 105's and 115's in any wind. But, if shooting short range, it's not gonna matter that much for friendly local competitions. Get to extreme precision and it will matter. Looser twists and short flat base bullets usually win.

Unless you are seriously shooting competition an 8 twist is the only way to go. Imho. Any bullet from 65 up to a 107 will shoot bug holes. At least in my experience. Have fun.

that 12 twist will/should shoot berger 68s great. buy a new barrel and id get an 8
 
Well !!!!! My first BR Prone Rifle was a 1-7.5 only shot Sierra back then 107's. True Winner.

Fast forward 11 or 12 Years ! Some Guy up in Washington at a Grizzley start some fad about a 6Norma Dasher.
Down the Rabbit Hole I went. 1-7.5 shoots 105HB very very well. Came in 2nd Sunday by 6 points. Theses old eyes get foggy a 78.

About the twist one of those Wisconsin Barrel Makers named Jack told me back some years.
It's better to have a little more than not enough............. It was a Barrel maker, not a Lady.

Same results here. Been testing this for several years now trying to see any advantage of the super slow twist over a bit faster. Not talking extremes here but even in a 10 twist, the light bullets consistently out shoot the heavies at closer ranges. I love my 12 twist stuff and not going back to the 13.5 and 14 stuff. I've won at the National championship BR level with both 68 and 80 grain bullets in 12 twist bbls. Torque may be the biggest difference and it's a non issue too in a 10.5lb gun with those bullets. My guns are mostly a bit heavier than that too. Step things up to a faster twist and heavier bullet, like an 8 twist with 105s, it becomes noticeable but very slightly. Optimal twist is over rated if the bullet is stable. In fact, I lean toward a 12 being a slight advantage over a 14. Lots of more important factors than that though. Good bbls and good bullets are at the top...and of course the wind.

Another example of "that'll never work" debunked.

Unless I was shooting short-range only 200 yards absolute max, I would get a 1:8"-twist barrel. We shoot 80s out of my 1:8"-twist 6BR and they put 3 shots in the high ones at 100 yards. The extra spin from the higher twist is noticeable when shooting at Varmints. Give you more "zing" on a hit.

The 1:8" lets you shoot the longer bullets when you want to venture out to 400, 600 yards.

Potentially a slower twist rate might increase barrel life, but much depends on the barrel heat, rate of fire, cleaning methods, so it's hard to prove definitively that a 1:12" will last longer than a 1:8".

I agree on the zing factor for sure. Pretty amazing to me, really.
And also on bbl life. Just way bigger factors, I think.
