First chambering

So I’m gonna be doing my first barrel chambering … I’m working on getting a worn barrel for practice before going after my new barrel, I’m wondering what you guys might have for tips…. I’ve done what reading, watching I can and feel fairly prepared… I have dialed in barrels before to thread muzzles so I’m not 100% green but just looking for a little advice or tips

I put a indicator on the outside of the barrel at 3:00 and do a rough dial in .
Once that's close Set up a long indicator on the inside the bore where the throat will be and do the fine adjustment.
Before I do any cutting I put a mark or two up where the barrel meets the chuck so I can tell if anything has slipped.
After every machining step you can check with the indicator to see if everything is still running true.
Once everything is done check you work with the indicator to see if there is any runout in you chamber.
Think every step through before starting.

Take the time to make a list of the order of operations in fitting n chambering. It is easy to get side tracked during various steps n overlook something.
Also, keep a pencil n paper handy To keep track of each cut n measurement.
Measure twice n cut once!

Take your time and reduce all distractions to a minimum, at least this is what I need when barreling but I have not done enough to even be considered a novice.

Write down the steps you're going to follow. Make sure it works. Write down all of your measurements for the tenon, etc. Real easy to suddenly get autism while you're running a machine and trying to remember numbers.

Don't go to deep without cleaning the reamer.

The set up is where the money is at, the making chips part is secondary.

I have a book that I run off the internet on barrel fitting . It is what I used to do my first barrel A big time gunsmith wrote it but I can't remember who . It is what I used and my guns all shot pretty good . Send me your address and I will send it to you . I'll never chamber another gun I give my lathe to my kids 500 miles away and I 84 now .
