ShotMarker Match Rules?

The ShotMarker System is a great innovation that is being used more and more. Occasionally, an unexplainable flier shows up. I’ve had it happen to me! The shot can’t be explained as a crossfire, unusual speed, angle, etc.

As a match director, it would be nice to have a set of rules for disputes. The only rules I’ve seen is you take what you get period. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Suggestion…shoot paper.

I’m also a shot marker MD, for monthly midrange matches. We have had no-reads but we have not seen a truly aberrant placement of a shot, yet. I can say that if Shotmarker lacks a certain degree of confidence in the placement, it can show it as a ghost shot.

The unexpected placement of a shot that was actually made by the correct shooter should be accepted as valid unless that target were to be in the process of proving that it is faulty. If that were to occur, and I have not seen it, then it would likely be consistent and I would look to see if I could allow the reshooting of the problematic scores.

I mean you shoot 10, 10, X, X, 8 vertical, X,X. Yes, not where you would expect at all.
That is what I thought you meant but wanted to be sure.

I have had shots like that on paper with pit pullers and blamed it on the pit pullers but it was probably me or my ammo which is also me. I have also experienced it with ETs and have to assume it was me also. By rule I have no other choice and I am willing to accept that to gain the other advantages of the ET.

There is one other point that I will make. If you look at pictures of shock waves in a good aerodynamic book you will see that as the Mach number drops from supersonic to subsonic, it transitions from a well defined cone to a very oblique bow wave. In the transonic region from Mach 0.8 to 1.2 it gets very messy, and I think that can be a problem for the ET. I am amazed that they do as well as they do in the range of Mach numbers that we use them in. I would strive to keep the velocity up as much as feasible on the target.

Best wishes
Clyde

Those mystery shots 99% of the time are on the shooter, they just don’t want to admit it.

If targets do have an issue it is when next door targets fire right at the same time, but as said earlier shotmarkers can show “ghost” shots.

Several times I have seen shooters lose their mind about an 8,7,etc in target. That can’t be, etc. then go down to pits and imagine that, shot right where they didn’t believe it to be.

I shot an f class match this last weekend that on my last string in the middle of the shoot it said I shot a 7 far left then said I shot a zero? Then said I shot a 7 far right? After examining the target there were no holes in any of the seven ring? Now how does it score a zero? These units have the latest code on them, how do you explain this? Relic

So, how many holes were on the target? Any shots near the 7 or 6 rings?
I'm guessing it scores a 0 when the shot hits outside of the scoring rings?

I was testing ammo (Dasher) a couple of weeks ago at 1000 yards on a Shotmarker that I have been using since 2019. The conditions were only 1-2 minutes from the left. I had a single shot that was 2 minutes right of all of the others and I was the only one shooting, so not a crossfire. What really stood out was the velocity at the target was nearly 100 fps faster than all of the others. I tend to load just below a sticky bolt, so if real, that would have resulted in a locked up bolt. Not sure of the cause, but there is no possible way for that bullet to be there at that speed. The paper target had 1000 other holes in it, so no way to verify, but not my first rodeo.

Or, as I was told my first trip to Lodi shooting on silver mt targets...."just shoot another round".... It wasn't a flyer, but a no shot on target. "just shoot another round" was the answer at National's so it's got to be OK for a local match. That was the start of my losing interest in F Class.

While I was shooting F-class actively, it wasn't unusual to have some go down to the pits to determine if that "one shot" was on the paper or not. Many times, there wasn't even a hole in the target near that location.

I was lucky. The match directors always started the day with a brand-new face, and those weird flyers almost always "landed" in a virgin part of the paper. I was of the opinion that simultaneous arrivals were partially to blame along with echos from the ground near the target. It was exceedingly infrequent from a shots perspective. If I had to guess, we would see one every 2,000 to 5,000 shots on target in match conditions.

I'm really liking PRS now. It has its own problems, but I don't hear cursing about the targets not reading, etc.

It was a fresh 600 yd target and all the shots were in 9 & 10 rings. One of the 7's came up and I was just getting ready to pull the trigger when shot marker caught my eye with a 7. There was a error msg popped up and went away before I could read it. Love the system but it's not perfect. Relic
