For Subsonic 223 Unique, Accurate #5, or Titegroup Powder?

be very careful of whatever type of filler you use. It can be an obstruction if you do it wrong. I use dacron from old dog toys my dog destroyed. In my 308 I use 1-1.5grs of dacron. And you DO NOT PACK IT IN THE CASE. You just stick it in a little at a time and let the fluff take up the space. If you pack it in it can act as a plug and it could be a very bad overload and run extreme pressures.

I am doing this with cast lead powder coated bullets. And using IMR4895 and Varget for powder. I am WAY beloy the load data you will find. But it is in the high 20ish gr area
I Just bought a little kapok, supposed to be perfect for filler, just want to not pack a whole lot
Keep ya posted, I'm shooting a 7.5" ar

This is one instance where, as long as it is safe to do so, you may want to start with the heavier charge and work your way down to subsonic speeds. Be very cautious about sticking a bullet in the barrel. Account for every bullet on paper. Period. If in doubt pull the bolt to check that the bore is clear. Check several sources for load data before you pick a charge weight to start with. Do not , I repeat, do not start with a max load. Find something middle of the road to start with charge wise. Good luck and keep us posted.

I personally prefer trail boss.
I have 5.5 bottles left of TB and it’s all being saved for use in my 45 colts. Until they make more, which doesn’t look very encouraging, I’ll be using alternatives so I can use what I have in the 45 colts. Hopefully that changes some day

You do not need a filler with any of the fast pistol powders. It is used in rifle powders not pistol. Especially in a 223 there is NO need no matter which powder you are using. There is not enough case volume for its use.

For some reason I had much better ignition qualities in my .22BR when I used Kapok to keep the powder to the rear. The Sierra ballistics guys recommended it many moons ago, when I was getting erratic ignition. Maybe it was my powder/primer combination. Don't know, but it did work.

In the 222/223 I have never had any issue with Unique igniting, no filler needed. VERY consistent ignition and great 50 yard groups from a bolt gun, 40 grain hornet bullet or 40 grain vmax. 4 grains unique.

I used dacron, a little ball, not rolled or made "tight", just a fluffy ball of it about q-tip size, resting over a 5 grain charge Unique in a 220 Swift. I poked it in with a long matchstick---NO HEAD on it!!!

Thats because of case volume. The BR has a lot more room in it than a 223 case
