Some HC 45-70 loading

Nice!… I have a new 1886 I need to work up loads for, I’m looking forward to it but my shoulder isn’t!….

A trapdoor load will kill a bear, no reason to load to where an 1886 brings tears to your eyes. The Hornady factory are .060 shorter ...I think....they did this so they would cycle in a marlin.
Bullet lube plays a big part of accuracy, and if loading black spg or tc bore butter/ beeswax mix.

I maybe wrong but I believe they did that so the ftx bullets would cycle

Mine shoots the factory federal with 300 grain hot cores pretty well , I did load a few with 4198 and 350 grain Speer that was a stout load and shot good also some 405 gr cast bullets with 3031 that were trapdoor loads that were accurate and pleasant to shoot but I only have maybe 20-25 rounds through it so far been very windy

You are right. The OAL of those bullets is a bit too long for standard case length. My old Marlin 95 started having feeding issues with bullets over 450 grains...same issue...nose stuck out a bit too far. No hope of cycling with 500-grain bullets!

Mine cycles the 405’s fine but I read the Lyman 400 grain cast was specifically designed for the lever guns. Idk if that’s true or not

Hornady FTX requires you to take .060 off the case to cycle in a lever, I’ve shot quite a few, when I use that bullet in my number one I just load and shoot, no trimming.

AA5744 has been a great powder for the 45-70 for me.

I bought 2 lbs of that a month or so ago to try in mine. Haven’t used it yet. What bullet and powder charge are you using if I can ask

I use quite a few different bullets, mostly light stuff. Hornady 300 HP, Hornady 350 RN, Hornady 325 FTX, Lehigh defense 380 flat nose, LeHigh defense 325 extreme defense, Barnes HP and some cast bullets. I haven’t really shot any of the heavy stuff. I’ve used AA5744 with all of those and few others but that’s my main powder. It’s expensive but it’s accurate, it’s also not load sensitive and can be used in 45 Colt and works well. I’m shooting 3 Marlin levers and #1

It’s a versatile powder, you can load them soft or stout.

Thank you I have most of what you mentioned on the shelf. I’ll give it a try
