Ugly 700, now what to do with it

I went down to the LGS shop today to pick up a lightweight 77 in 257 Robert’s I just bought. While they were running the 4473 I browsed their used rifles and found an old 700 in 270, beat to hell but the action wasn’t all that bad. It actually looks to have been shot very little. Everything works as it should, price tag was 250.00. That’s a deal but I had to ask if they would do any better, they did, 200.00 plus taxes. So I bought it for just under 220.00 out the door, hell the bottom metal is worth half of that.

So now what? I wasn’t gonna do any builds for awhile, atleast until I got caught up on the ones in progress but I have a soft spot for the early 700s and the price was a no brainer. I’ve owned a 6.5-06 AI and a 280 AI, enjoyed them both. However I called Zack to see what his thoughts were and what reamers he had. The two we talked the most about was a 25-284 or a 25-06 AI. I’m leaning towards the 25-284, set up to shoot 110-120s, maybe Berger 115s or 110 BIBs or 110 accubonds. I’ve never owned a cartridge based on the 284 Winchester, I’ve always want to too.

Thoughts? If I remember right when reading PO Ackley‘s books the 25-06 was one of the cartridges that didn’t show a lot of improvement in the AI version. I’m not known to have the best memory so I could be wrong. If you’ve owned either one of the quarter bores mentioned please chime in, I’d love to hear what your thoughts are. I know bullet selection in .264 and .284 is much better but that’s ok, there’s enough good bullets to make it work. I’m not really interested in the heavies, 130gr plus, I have that covered with other rifles. This would be more of walk about rifle, shots out to 500 and in.

That was a great snag. Around here( central missouri), you'll pay a lot more for a lot less. A 25-06 would be fun, I grew up shooting coyotes with one. A 6.5-06 would be another good choice.

Absolutely that is rocking & rolling for a 75 gr. bullet.

Try cleaning the Barrel real good ( Touch of JB's slathered, on a Patch over a Bronze Brush ) after a thorough cleaning of, BoreTech carbon Eliminator ( Clean the JB's OUT, real well, afterward ! ) and shoot some 130 grain Berger Classic Hunters thru it as, IT just might, surprise you with, real good groups and,.. LOW Recoil.
The 140 Berger Classic's shot Awesome, in my .270 WSM, 1-10 twist and they Killed like,.. the "Hammer of, Thor" ! You should be pretty Happy with that Rifle as IS and at THAT ,.. Price ! ( WOW ! )

It’s already in the mail. Nothing against 270s, I grew up with a 700 classic, loved it.

That appears to be a fairly early 700, without the anti bind slot on the bolt

Looks like a real hunting rifle. Probably shot less than 10 rounds a year but was carried all over the country side and has all the bumps and nicks to prove it.

I’d go 25-284. Actually I would go with a long throat 25x47 and shoot the 13x gn bullets that are out. Modern version of the 250 Savage that I always had a soft spot for.

The .25-'06 AI will get a .257 Weatherby's attention. Fast twist with the 135-class bullet it likes best would make for a world-class LR antelope/mule deer rifle. Excellent brass for forming, if you don't mind turning necks a little.

I burn surplus WC-870 in mine with excellent results. Sparky magnum primers required . . .

I would but I have that covered, I also have a 25x47L Alex built that I shoot BIB 110s out of, it’s one my favorite rifles. I’m a big fan of anything based of the 6.5x47 case. I have four rifles based on that case. I want something a bit faster with this one though.

I love my 6*284 my 6.5*284 is nice and so is my straight 284 it’s a neat case!…. Go for the 25*284!…. But if it were me I would throat it for 135 Berger’s and go long

Great find bud! Years ago I had a Browning A-Bolt in .25-06, absolutely drove tacs for a light rifle. Wish I still had it. Lots of great choices in 25 cal today.
.25-284 would be very cool. Have fun and keep us posted.
