Take off barrel opinion

I have a barrel off my GAP Templar 2. I have a spare 700 action and had the go gauge in the bolt and set head space. Measured from the action face to the barrel and got .270 can i get a custom recoil lug and check headspace for proper fit. Seems simple enough. This is a expensive barrel and would like to use it on my 700 action vs the GAP for a while.

I have been headspacing remage barrels for the last three years for those who question my experience lol.

Maybe it's obvious, but the .270 is from the action face [on the Templar action?] to what part of the barrel?
Also, why would a custom lug [a locking lug?] be needed to check headspace when the barrel is screwed on the 700?

I recently purchased a used barrel from a member here. It was fitted for a Borden TPE/Nesika J action but WITH a .312" recoil lug. Mine is a glue in and has no recoil lug. I bought a surface ground recoil lug and cut off the protrusion to make a round spacer. Headspaced fine. Best group so far is a 0.058" @ 100 yards. Good enough for what I use it for.

A Go gauge is sized for minimum SAMMI chamber length. You might want to add a couple of thou.

Likely you are confusing the term 'lug'.

His reference is to the recoil lug not the bolt lug.

806guns,

Real gunsmiths can fix and adjust your problem no sweat. Better than trying to adjust an expensive barrel without the experience.

;)
I like the challenge. I will order the one from PTG and adjust accordingly best thing i can think of. There is a machine shop in town if i need the .300 lug i can have then surface grind it for me.
Closest gun smith i trust is 2 hours away.

Looks like i need to cut .003 off the new lug. Based off my no go with scotch tape on the backside till it locks.

Good thing i have family with the proper machines

I realize that people do this and live but heaspace is only one of a few critical dimensions of a bbl relative to the bolt. Bottom bbl clearance is an important and critical safety spec as well, for example. A recoil lug can only address one of the dimensions. I suggest talking to a good smith that you trust for some help and insight as to why the clearance numbers are critical and what they should be

Im willing to learn if someone will show me. Local gunsmiths arent a thing around me. They are at least 2 hours away and might not have the time to show me the ins and outs. As they dont know me.

The only other critical issue would be clearance of the bolt nose in the counterbore…should be at .010” or less (but more than .005-7). Basically too deep of a counterbore would leave unsupported case and too shallow your bolt nose would hit. This is pretty unlikely but it could be too tight. With the bolt closed on an empty chamber and the firing pin either removed or in fired position, push bolt forward and aft to see how much movement you have. If the bolt handle bottoms out on the action to the front of the bolt notch you won’t be able to get an accurate read as you’re trying to see where the bolt nose hits the barrel counterbore.

The alternative method is to stick a piece of lead (solder works) on the bolt nose and close it in the barreled action. Remove carefully and measure the thickness where the bolt nose squashed against the barrel counterbore. .007-.010” is ideal.
