Is it possible or practical to cut the bottom of this stock flat?

I have a rimfire benchrest rifle built on an Anschutz action, with an unknown maker barrel on it, and an unknown maker fiberglass stock on it. It shoots pretty well and is not the limiting factor in my performance in ARA unlimited. Anyway, it is an old school design stock and I was wondering if it is possible or practical to machine the bottom of the pistol grip/butt flat and parallel with the fore end. Maybe then add an aluminum plate glued/screwed to the flat. Or if a good stock person / gunsmith could do it.

Why is every bench rest stock made today flat on the bottom of the butt and parallel with the fore end? I presume it is so that the rifle rides the rest in a straight line during recoil and eliminates or reduces potential vertical shifts in POI. But I am learning as I go, so I am likely missing something.

I don't know if that's the exact reason, but I know that's the reason I like flat bottom stocks.

Short Range Benchrest rifles, arguably the most accurate Rifles on the planet at 100/300/300 yards, can not have a bottom of the butt stock parallel with the forearm.

The stock you have now is a legal stock for Light and Heavy Varmint Benchrest Rifles.

Nope. Won’t work. If you cut it parallel with the forend, the cut will get wider at the back of the butt and won’t ride in a bag.
You could easily reshape it if it were wood but not fiberglass.
He could attach a piece to the bottom that would ride in a bag though right? Perhaps something slippery like hdpe

Tom,

As long as the rifle will RTB it should be fine with that stock. I use a wood copy of the McMillian Edge which has an angled rear as well. my rifle (1411) is a very good shooter.

If you really want to try and make it a SL you can fabricate a bag rider such as I drew on your picture. I made them for the factory TH stock, and it worked great. just need to make a new recoil plate but with the bottom extending so you can mount a piece of round rod stock.

Good idea, I hadn't thought of that. The rifle shoots well and I am just kicking around ideas to see if I should consider making a change. I use a front rest and rear bag as opposed to a one piece rest with rollers, which seems to be what a lot of guys are shooting. I still have a loooong way to go in figuring out how to read my flags and pull the trigger at the right time, among other things.

Look at the Parmoor stocks from England. I just put a Anschutz in his BR stock. You will have to finish it to your liking. About $400.00 shipped from England. Stephen is a good guy to chat with.

I believe the Parmoor guy has retired from stock making. I saw a Youtube video where he explains why he is giving it up. I'm not sure if anyone took the business over.
