Modern (?) Across-The-Course

Before I messed up my back for the second time (hauling hay) in 2007, and ruptured my right arm biceps in 2008 (bungee jumping) I used to shoot Across-The-Course with a Rock-River-Arms match grade AR15. It was fun and I enjoyed it, i.e., except for the heat combined with the heavy shooting coat.

If memory serves me right (ha!), we used to start the various positions standing up, and then we had to fall into the required kneeling, squatting, or prone positions for shooting. BTW, back then we only used open sights.

I just watched a couple of videos of such shooting matches, and it appeared that the shooters start in the actual shooting position, e.g., sitting, kneeling, prone, etc. Do you know if this is correct, or if perhaps the videos skipped the standing start?

Thanks!

Alex

Even for CMP matches, if you're over 60? you have the option to start from position - yes?
No.
a competitor who is unable to stand or
who has a medical authorization (including competitors with Distinguished
Marksman authorizations) to remain in position may begin rapid-fire
stages in position. They are eligible to win other awards in accordance
with these rules or the Match Program, but they are not eligible to earn
EIC Distinguished Rifleman credit points, win National Trophy Match
awards or win overall match winner awards. Competitors who begin rapidfire
stages in the firing position must follow the same loading commands
and procedures that are specified in Rule 5.2.3 b). Competitors who do
not stand may not look through their spotting scopes while competitors are
standing. No competitor may cycle the bolt to chamber a round or shoulder
the rifle until after the firing time begins (targets rise or the command
TARGETS is given) and no competitor who begins a rapid-fire series in
position may fire a shot until after a shooter who was standing fires a shot.

Alex it was a pleasure to shoot Sierra Cup with you Saturday.
Kenny above puts it out there pretty well.

NRA and CMP Cup matches are starting from Position (Rapids). However NRA allows alibi string if a malfunction is not cleared. In CMP Cup matches No Alibi is permitted unless a Range alibi. You must clear the issue and continue safely or lose the points. Much Like the EIC match. However as Kenny L stated above EIC matches for EIC points we must stand for rapids.
CMP Trophy Matches require us to stand just a Kenny notes to Win.

Oh and 4.5x optics are now allowed in NRA/CMP XTC competition.

Is that for both EIC's and their 80 shot matches?

NRA hasn’t started rapid fire from standing in getting close to 20? years already. CMP standing is only required if you are chasing leg points, if you don’t care about points you can shoot all rapids starting from position.

Thank you all for your replies.

About six years after I stopped shooting Across The Course, I found F-Class, and got hooked. I started shooting F-T/R, a couple of years later I achieved High Master Mid-Range, and started shooting Long-range.

After a few matches at 1000-y I realized that I was too old to learn to 'High-Master' the wind shooting a .308 and switched to F-Open with a .284W. I have done well at 1000-y with the .284W, have shot many HM scores, but never enough back to back to earn the HM classification. Now I am somewhat travel-restricted and heat is a big issue for me. Still, I may be able to squeeze a few more prone matches in F-Open.

As a side note: Thanks to George Farquharson we all, old and young, can enjoy this wonderful shooting sport.
