Unique Encounter at the Range

I was at the rifle range today working out my Browning A Bolt, 223 Rem Varmint Stalker getting ready for the soybean patches and the hog boys. Of course, I was practicing off my cross sticks.

A guy was there with a shooting mat, and 308 shooting 3 position center fire at 200 yards. I think him and me are the only ones at the club of over 2,000 members that don't shoot off a bench. It reminded me of my days of shooting 3 position small bore rifle many, many years ago.

PS: He was shooting darn good!

It’s a “free” country, sorta, for now. So people should do as they please.

Best move I’ve ever made was getting off the benches. And clubs do have some fantastic people, but enjoying a hobby without everything that groups of people bring into the mix, is preferable.

Bench shooting is for getting your load worked, a proper zero and bench rest shooting.

Acvurate field shooting requires practicing field positions.

I am sorry I did not realize your name was Donald also, my question was addressed to Dgd6mm.

As a kid in elementary school I was shooting 3 position SB. It brings back memories. Every once in a while I practice positional, just me and my rifle.
I really enjoyed it when I was much younger but at my age, I couldn't get into those positions these days let alone shoot well. Even off my cross sticks, I have to shoot from a small portable sportsmen's chair.

The guy shooting in those positions yesterday was older, I'd guess mid 60's or older and he was quite athletic and able with ease to get into the various positions. I could only watch and admire.

Was that In Plam Beach County, Donald????
Yes, I shot with 2 different teams. First was out of the Village of Royal Palm Beach. Chief Horn put it together. I was in 4th grade then. 2nd was with the father of a girl. Him and his wife took care of everything. I went to Wynnebrook Elementary school with in the 5th grade. She shot also. This was all NRA sanctioned Every match and practice was held at Everglades Rifle and Pistol Club. The simpler time in life, and we didn't even know it. The body is starting to get old. Cindy just told me this morning when I was complaining about the pinched nerve in my lower back. I said I'm getting old, she said no you're not, your just getting older.
65 this year. Hopefully a good 10-15 left in me.

Every wed evening our club has a cast bullet shoot. We shoot offhand only with standard hunting type rifles at 25 meters at 10 meter air rile targets. We have a dime riding on each shot. We shoot 4 shots then bring in the target and score. Who ever hits closest to the center in that row wins the dimes for that row. I have won a lot of dimes over the years and lost some too. It's a fun shoot and a good bs session also. We have been doing this for over 30 years at Matanuska valley Sportsman
range near Palmer ,Alaska.
