Newer rem700 factory varmint rifle

Maybe better maybe not. But I can understand the desire to use and existing platform.

I had a 700 re-barreled in 2010 with a varmint contour Douglas Match barrel in 223 Rem. This rifle shoots in the .1 and .2 off the bench with a front and rear rest, best group was .150, 3 shots. And I am not an experience bench shooter, in fact I hate shooting off a bench. But it does reveal the capability of this rifle. Taken many of hogs with it.

I would think the tikka would shoot 1/2in at 100 with handloads

If I was dead set on a Remington factory rifle I’d search for an older one if you’re not in a hurry. Most of those rifles shoot with little load development. I’d rather have one out eighties than a new one if I was looking for a Remington.

The new Tikka Super varmints are nice rifles, they are more than the standard T3s but they come with more features too. I had one in 6.5 PRC and it shot itty bitty with very little load development.

I also have a T3 stainless in 223 I like a lot. Shoots great, fast twist.

Seriously thinking about buying the tikka varmint and drop it in a bell and Carlson m40 stock .

I picked up a super cheap (new) 700 ADL in 223 a couple of years ago. Put it in an HS Precision stock and installed a different trigger. Looked at the barrel with a bore scope and it had some of the worst RR tracks I have ever seen. I always hear about them in some Savage barrels, but since I don't use those, don't know. Here is how it shot with the better stock and trigger at 100 meters.

That`s why I don`t use a bore scope on my Savage .223s and they shoot like yours ( actually my LRPV shoots a bit better ). I suppose the lesson is that what one sees through a bore scope will not necessarily reflect how a rifle will shoot.

I have a stock (though I bedded it and put on a Jewell trigger) Remington 700 Varmint model which I believe has the Bell and Carlson stock. It doesn't shoot factory ammo worth a darn - but will easily shoot 1/3 to 1/2 MOA with select "medium weight" handloads, using 52 Bergers, 52 Nosler CC or 50 V-Max, etc. I forget what the twist is - but I believe it to be a 1-12". For out to 300 yards, one doesn't need a real fast twist. A 1-9" twist would be a good compromise for 50-69 grain bullets, provide minimal recoil for a gal, etc.

My 2019 vintage Remington 700 Varmint SPS in .223 has shot well from the get-go. 1/2-inch groups pretty consistently with 52 grain bullets. Shot so good I wore out the factory barrel. I just re-barreled it with another factory Sendero heavy barrel from PTG. If I were buying something for the wife, I would probably buy a regular BDL model with a 22" barrel, put a Timney trigger on it and drop it in a stock of your choice.

With all the upgrades that come with it, that would be a much better option over a Remington, and have the same pattern.

Preferred and Straight Jacket make prefit barrels for them, or you can do a remage nut style.

My Remington Varmint 223 shoots .500" or better but it's a 14 twist. I don't think you're going to find much out there with an 8 or 9 twist. I would recommend a Howa mini 1500 in 6 ARC. It is super light and a great shooter. But good luck finding ammo or reloading stuff.

For about 1000 ish $ I could have a varmint model I think . And have a good barrel,action and trigger . Could drop it in a b&c stock and come out cheaper and probably better . It will be 1k just to have my rem 700 action rebarrel

well $500 dollars inflation adjusted from 1985 to 2024 is about $1500. and today's $600 dollar rifle would have cost 'only' $200 back in the day. so, the question may be what kind of quality can you get for $1000+?

Morning , I'm thinking about putting something together for my wife . In 223 or 308 . She likes the stock I have on my custom 223 but wants a lighter gun . It has a straight taper barrel and is HEAVY .
Was thinking about getting a remington varmint and drop it in a bell and Carlson m40 stock .
My concern is how good is the factory barrel and how good will it group with hand loads ?
Has anyone got one to shoot under a inch at 100?
How do thay do out to 300 yards?

If the factory barrel on these will shoot 1in or undder at 100 with handloads ill be happy .
I'm just worried about the quality of the barrels as iv always had customs on my rifles . I know thay wont be near a custom but it being a varmint gun I'd imagine it would be a decent barrel ? It's a 5R barrel.
I think the 223 is a 1in8 and should handle a 77 grain smk
By going this route I can afford to build hers in 223 maby a 308 and my custom tikka I want

I have worked on, and shot 6 of the newest Remington Arms rifles. They are far better than those from the past recent years, and arguably as good as Remington ever produced. 4 were 308 ADL varmint 1 in 10", 1 was 223 1 in 8" varmint, and one a 7 PRC long range. The varmint stocks are throwaway, I restocked the varmints into wood M40 Vietnam era reproduction stocks, pillar bedded and glass bedded of course and replaced the trigger guard with a steel versions. The 308's averaged .665" 5 shot group with 168s, and the 223 .36" average with 77s - all with tailored handloads. No regrets given the wood stocks, so I think they will meet your expectations. The Tikka is a better rifle all around, but at twice the price (the ADL is $629) but after adding a stock you'll have to decide what makes sense. Here are the stocks I am talking about, while thier Tung oil finish was curing.
