The Tomball Gun Club just NW of Houston Tx hosted the NBRSA Texas State Varmint for Score today.

A northern front came through early in the morning and it was a very cool 50 degrees, compounded by a 15 to 20 mph wind the was just plain atrocious. The wind was so bad that only eight shooters stayed “clean” at 100 yards.
Jackie Schmidt won the 100 with a 250 19x.
In the afternoon things got really bad. We were all kinda joking that anyone cleaned a target should get some kind of screamer patch.
Joe Duke persevered and really showed us all how to do it. He. “Only” dropped Two points at 200 and came away with not only the 200 Yardage Win but the Grand Agg as well, making him the NBRSA Texas State Varmint for Score Champion

Thanks to the Tomball Gun Club for hosting the match, and special thanks to Richard and Dwayne Pullum for serving as Match Directors and the excellent Target crew.

Thanks to all my Tomball buddies for a great day.
I never did get started at 100 yards and shot a poor match. Even dropped a point in all that windy mashup.
200 of course did not get easier as the wind never let up. However, I found a little condition that worked and kept coming around. It would only give a shot it two at a time but I hung on to it all afternoon.
A great way to celebrate my birthday for sure.

Thanks to @jackieschmidt for posting the results. I didn’t get a photo of the final results in the 200, but I did get a picture of the 100 yd final (attached). There were only 7 shooters that stayed clean in the 100, and the actual 5th place guy in the 100 wasn’t Ed.

I also noticed a last name that got butchered just a bit, The correct name for the 4th place winner in the 200 was

Larry Saavedra………241 2x

Once again the winds in Tomball were a tough nut to crack, but @JoeDuke and @jackieschmidt showed us how it’s done.

Over the winter, I decided to put together another VFS Rig.
I had almost all the components on hand.
Action is a RL no eject Stiller S/S Viper; an all stainless Viper action weighs 57 ounces.
Stock is a Kelbly that I had won about 15 years ago and never used. Action bedded in Marine Tex.
Barrel is a Brux 17 twist chambered in 30BR. The reamer is virtually the same as Jackie Schmidts reamer.
Trigger is a Jewell carefully hand tuned.
Scope is a Nightforce 15-55x.
Tuner is from Mike Ezell.
Barrel chambered by my brother Sam. Rifle assembled by me.
All up the rifle weight abt 13 lbs 6 ounces.
The stock was made as a light varmint so is fairly light. That combined with the heavy action and scope gets the weight balance point well back so it handles well in the bags.
Load is a 108 grain bullet pushed by a BIG dose of VV130. Fed 205M primer.

BTW, those 108 grain bullets were made by Jim Cline of IBS and Tackdriver fame. Thanks Jim!
