223 factory ammo for PDs?

Is time the long pole in the tent here? Will your friend have sufficient time to load ammunition, ignoring the load development commitment? If the answer to that is 'Yes', I'd be willing to bet that his rifle will produce results at least equal to the best low-cost factory/reman ammo he'll find and have time to test. For example, just loading 25 gr. of H335 behind a 50 gr. V-Max and a CCI 450 is almost certain to work well. I have yet to find a decent .223 rifle that wouldn't shoot this load under and inch. Same powder charge behind a 50 gr. Hornady SPSX is another sure winner, and this bullet is a grenade on prairie dogs and the like.

Just an alternative . . .

Winchester white box - 45 gr HP bullet, they are amazingly accurate in every rifle I have shot them in and give very good results on PD's. These can be found at most Walmarts at a fairly reasonable price

Fiocchi has a 40 and 50 gr ammo also and they also work quite well and are accurate but are not as easy to find.
If you can find the above Winchester white box, buy it. The Fiocchi is readily available by me, and decent as well

My friend has a single stage press, but the only dies he has is a set for 45 Colt from when he shot cowboy action years ago. I'm pushing in that direction, but time does not allow for it at this point.

Sierra is making a 69gn “varmigeddon” round. Not sure if it’s a match King bullet or something else. The group before us last year used them and was saying good things.

I'll definitely have to look into those for future use. Right now I'm using 40gr and 53gr Vmax, and I have a some old 75gr A max loaded if I want to reach out a little farther.

So far as I know they aren’t selling the bullets, you might look at the Sierra site, maybe they describe what kind of bullets they are. I’ll look as well now that I’m thinking about it. E

Ahh, I didn't realize you were talking about factory ammo. Personally, I don't shoot much factory ammo out of my rifles. I think I bought 2 boxes for my 25-06 when I first bought it back in the mid 90s. The only other factory rifle ammo I've shot has been 100 rnds of 6.5 Grendel just because I needed the brass, and a few different 300 BO offerings to see how I'd like them as a defensive round. FWIW, factory loads that use the 110gr Vmax are too fragile to use on deer of any size, but are completely devastating if you only need around 12" of penetration on something... ;)
