One engine, a bow thruster, two generators and two aux generators.

Dali is propelled by a single low-speed two-stroke crosshead diesel engine coupled to a fixed-pitch propeller. Her main engine, a 9-cylinder MAN-B&W 9S90ME-C9.2[11] unit manufactured by Hyundai Heavy Industries under license, is rated 41,480 kW (55,630 hp) at 82.5 rpm.[2] Her service speed is 22 knots (41 km/h; 25 mph).[5] For maneuvering in ports, Dali has a single 3,000 kW (4,000 hp) bow thruster. Electricity is generated onboard by two 3,840 kW (5,150 hp) and two 4,400 kW (5,900 hp) auxiliary diesel generators.[4]
 
Just read there is an obscure 1851 law called the Titanic law that can limit the ship owners liability............so the American taxpayer is on the hook, as usual, to pay for this fiasco
Baltimore is a major port that services the entire Country. The entire Country should be willing to help get this tragedy rectified.
My Google-fu tells me that dependent on size and capacity of vessel they will have 2-4 engines.
A typical cargo ship like this has one main propulsion engine, for this size vessel, it would be a 50 to 60 thousand horsepower Diesel.

There are auxiliary generators that run the rest of the ship. To my knowledge, there are always two sets, one is the primary, the other is the standby in case there is a failure with the primary. If the analysis of the video is correct, the primary power generator failed, the standby kicked in, and then for some reason it failed as well.

The steering system is powered by hydraulics. Electric motors run the hydraulic pumps that run the steering. If you loose electricity, no steering.

It’s difficult to say about the main propulsion engine. Keep in mind, if the prop is not producing thrust, the rudder really does not work very well, as it works by deflecting water flow from the prop.

Since the ship was still moving at a fairly robust speed when it hit the bridge abutment, the main engine might still have been functioning.

As was said, the investigation should pinpoint the exact chain of events.
 
Guess I hope that phrase isn't used on my next plane ride. "Sometimes things just happen" Wings falling off, Engines in flames....My gut says something isn't right with this. Thats all I need. Dundalk Marine Terminal offline for how many days? The supply chain .... has a major problem right now. Along with the victims and their families. How does a vessel this size lose power?
I'm ignorant of virtually all of what may or may not have contributed to this but like you, it just feels wrong vs what we are being told. Angle, speed, losing power, just lots of factors. It's just in my gut is all. Wouldn't be a bit surprised to find out that we aren't being told everything at this time, for whatever reason. Never fear though, Mayor Pete is on top of this, as usual. o_O Doesn't that make everyone feel much better?

Depending on the amount of contaminates in the fuel, it's possible.

I'd not be surprised if it's standard practice to run a test on them all before leaving a port. Quite possible that was enough to burn most of the fuel in the system and then it wouldn't take much to get contaminated fuel.

I don't know if the fuel was bad obviously, but I can see how it could be possible.

Ask any truck driver about contaminated fuel. It happens fairly often.
 
Talked to a Client that is a ship captain in that area. The talk among the pros is that the ship lost propulsion and they were able to start the emergency generators to get power to go hard rudder over to one side and got the left anchor deployed. Don't know if this is true but my client is a pro. His take is that without the main engines with ship that size the crew were just passengers no matter what they did.

Don't know what is true. He sails out of that area. He's a pretty matter of fact guy.

So, with this contaminated fuel theory, how long would it take to clear contaminated fuel? 5 seconds?
Sounds like these are NASCAR grade mechanics. C'mon.... burnt fuel looked pretty black once the coal was poured.
